UPDATE For those that signed up with 1&1 Hosting VERY COLD

A while back there was a post about 3 Years Free hosting with 1and1.

There was a bunch of talk about setting the "Cost Limit" to $1.00 but when I went to sign up I noticed the following on the "Cost Limit" screen:

"Please note: Cost limit does not block the services or features in any way. This is a service provided to help you keep track of your spending. "

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT !!!. My first thought was If I read this correctly, they will NOT stop your hosting at the limit of $1 (like you would expect) but continue to charge you as your bandwidth continues at the .99c per gig.

I e-mailed 1and1 support asking and here is the response:

"You did indeed read correctly; the cost limit you can set in your control panel is for information only. You may send us a fax stating your customer ID and full name, in which you ask to set up a real (hard) limit for costs. Please do not forget to sign that fax."

Now admittedly, if you hit your cost limit they will e-mail you BUT if you blow through your cost limit and don't get the e-mail for a day or so you could find a rather large bill waiting for you.

Forgive me as I am a newbie to Web hosting, but what would primarily cause you to go over this 1.00 limit? ???? Page hits? So the trick is to never host a coupon on your site for Anandtech members?

Hi, moron(s)

1&1 don't require you to have a credit card # on file, I wonder how do they charge u.

Unless u provide your billing info to them. (<- I don't see why u can't fake one)

at most if your bandwidth exceed, u site will stop functioning. btw, 5G/month should be a decent bandwidth.

cough.. cough...

Uh, hi moron.. you provided an adress correct? Its called a BILL.....

I think its stupid to be mad at a webhost, when in fact they were always open about the $.99/gig after 5gigs of transfer a month. If you think this is cold you obviously weren't paying attention to your limits. Don't bad mouth 1&1 hosting when they didn't do anything wrong. Not cold and not a Hot Deal.

WOW, Ok, not to continue a flame war here. First, I am NOT mad at 1&1 but the 1&1 thread was VERY popular and in my opinion alot of people that have never hosted a website probably signed up.

I think the "cost limit" page could be misleading and there was a huge amount of talk about "just setting it to $1". I only wanted to let those who thought it was a "Hot Deal" know how to get around the possiblity of a huge bill.

Oh, and I actually went through all 9 pages of the "repost" looking for this answer (even asked the question on page 8) , didn't find it so this post was to warn those who didn't understand that "cost limit" , sorry to offend the sensitive.

For those that asked, you would go over your 5gig limit based on a large number of hits or a lot of pictures downloads (I believe they even count uploads against the 5g, not sure).

I don't remember ever having to provide an address, just a phone number

There's a difference? Give me your phone number and I'll bill send you a bill to your address so you understand.

Good post, it's nice to know I can fax them to not it go over the cost limit I set. I noticed that wording myself, but didn't think to contact them about it.
Does anyone know if email going through their server counts against that 5GB?
Since it was free for 3 years, and with EV1 having the $5 domain registration, it's worth grabbing one just to have an email address that doesn't change when I switch ISP's 🙂

hot post for me. i must have missed the original thread that talked about it.

Most people here can't be gimps that can sit in front of the computer all day and read every forum. Lighten up.
