Update: Flag replaced. I need to report a crime

Do0d, there's no Gestapo to report this to, there's really no one at all. As was said, it's a crime with no penalty.

And, hey, for a country as huge and contentiously diverse as ours, we are pretty damn free.

Not allowing a tattered and torn flag to remain flapping carelessly in the wind is all about etiquette and respect. A lot of young men died in the Civil War and WWI and WWII to preserve our rights and freedoms as symbolized by Old Glory.

And yeah, our symbol has taken some credibility hits in the last several decades from the disgraceful and unnecessary acts of more than one administration, it's true.

These days, "patriotism" has been appropriated by a certain reactionary part of the political spectrum and has been ignorantly wielded as a cudgel against those they disagree with, giving credence to Samuel Johnson's dictum that, "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."

This kind of angry, ignorant hyper-patriotism is sad, because I grew up in a time and place where people proudly and unselfconsciously displayed the flag on the Fourth of July and Flag Day and Memorial Day and Veterans Day in a simple, heartfelt, apolitical appreciation for all the opportunities living in the United States of America had afforded them.

It's ignorant that this company ignores all this, and they should be shamed into fixing it.

"should"

The word has a completely different meaning than "shall" or "must". If you read the flag code you'll find a whole lot of "should" because the code is entirely advisory in nature. The only folks who have to abide by the flag code are military and federal employees while on the clock. The rest of us can still wipe our red, sweaty necks with flag bandannas.

Nope.

I want to make Desecration of the National Symbol for reasons of Hate... Against the Law.

If someone is burning the flag to say "Fuck You America, you suck" ..

then yes... i do not agree with it.. and if i saw that person doing it .. i'd punch them in the fucking nustsack.

You're full of bullshit. You can't force people to feel or act a certain way.

Where do we draw the line then? The New England Patriots football team are called the Patriots, we should therefor have a law that makes it illegal to hate the team or boo them because that would be unpatriotic.

Seriously, I think you're an idiot.

I was recently in Astoria, Queens and I passed by the Kaufman Astoria Studios. They have an American flag hoisted on the roof of the building. The flag is all torn up and needs to be replaced. I reported this to the studio but they've done nothing. It's unacceptable to have the American flag looking like this. It may as well be upside down. Who can I report this too?

The Department of I Don't Give a Shit?

Austrailia and New Zealand are QUITE CLOSE to each other...

Yet another NZ Edamakation failure.

USA is quite close to Mexico, so I guess it's just an offshoot too? Seriously, our historic ties to Australia are about as strong as our historic ties to USA. Moron.

It's a 1400 mile river... so they are actually pretty far apart.

River? WTF? It's the ocean. That's like talking about the river between Alaska and Russia.

Maybe they should, but if people are really so outraged why not just refuse to purchase their goods? Do you really need a law telling people how to fly their flag?

you're trying to say we have the same origin as Aus, which is as legitimate as saying Mexicans have the same origin as Americans because they're close to one another.

And i'm pretty sure there are many americans with mexican ancestory .. as well as mexicans with american ancestory... as well as canada <-> America.

when countries are that close together... cross-contamination is inevitable.

but i guess they didn't teach you any of this in your highly decorated educational system.
