Driving in to work this morning in my '99 Stratus, I kicked the cruise control off and began braking while steering onto the exit ramp of the highway. Instead of the usual shift-down to second gear, my automatic transmission stayed in third for a while, then suddenly jerked into second. After I stopped at an intersection and then accelerated, it stayed in second wayyyy too long, momentarily went to third, then back to second (where it stayed to rest of the trip) and illuminated the check engine light. :(

After calming down and trying not to think about the cost of transmission replacement (!) I did some google searching. I learned that this condition is known as Chrysler's "limp mode" and happens when the PCM detects problems with the transmission/speed sensors.

It appears that a VERY COMMON problem with these cars is a failure of one of the two transmission speed sensors (input or output). Mine has the classic symptom - sudden spontaneous change to "limp in" mode with check engine light on. I am guessing that in my case the input is the problem since my speedometer still works. I REALLY REALLY hope this is the cause - the sensors are only $20 or so and look easy to replace (I don't want to think about transmission replacement :( )

Has anyone changed one of these before????????

-------Cliff Notes------
- Scoobmaster's auto transmission gets stuck in 2nd this morning.
- Scoob gets sick feeling pondering cost of tranny replacement
- Google search reveals it is most probably a bad speed sensor ($20 part)
- Scoob hopes that this will be it and asks if an ATOT members have
experience with this problem.

(crosses fingers that it really is only the $20 sensor!!!!!!!)

** EDIT -UPDATE **
Just got the call from an acquaintance of mine that owns a transmission shop (it's good to know people like this ;) ). It was the aforementioned input speed sensor. Total cost with new sensor full electronic diagnostic of transmission control system and labor = $78. Just made my day a little brighter :)

I know someone with a 98 Stratus who had something extremely similar happen. She's one of those "take it to the dealership" types, but IIRC, she came away with $700 in bills and had a couple computer modules replaced, or something similar.

Can overheats due to slow coolant leak, rear brakes are completely shot, Service Engine Soon light sporadically comes on along with the Door Ajar light AND the Brake light, car shifts into nuetral when you turn to the left, passenger side window doesnt roll down, rear sway bar is broke.
So hows YOUR day going?

We had one do that in a minivan.

No, but I my OTHER vehicle is a '97 Grand Caravan with the 3L mitsu - the one infamous for noisy lifters (Ok, Ok, so I actually LIKE Chrysler products - so what? ;) )

The stratus has a 2.4L

check engine means there's a code stored. it also means you should get it scanned to figure out what's REALLY wrong before guessing what is. :)

I like them too, but I don't know if I'd buy anything other than the LH series due to concerns about trannies.

I'm so glad they don't sneak in those mitsu engines anymore (salesman at the chrysler dealership: "It has a JAPANESE ENGINE, so you know it has to be good!")

The LH series isn't exactly bulletproof either.......

I've never seen a current-gen one with a major problem. Maybe I'm sheltered;)

Dunno. My friend's parents have a first gen Intrepid and it's had some big tranny problems (3.5L)

That's true - when they switched to the 2.7 and 3.2 engines in (1999 maybe?) they seemed to go from quite unreliable to quite good in a big hurry.

I'm surprised those engines hadn't found their way into the minivans as well actually. Maybe they don't fit.

I like Chryslers, but they have the absolute worst electronic 4spd transmissions, followed closely by Ford and Honda (yes HONDA, Google Honda V6 Transmisson Failure) I think that all of em need to start over and redesign them from the begining.
The funny thing is Chysler used to have the most reliable 3spd transmissions out ther (the old Torqueflight series) the one in my AMC went for nearly 30 years and 150k before it needed any major work, and then it was just the torque converter. It cracked and needed to be replaced.

Yeah, Honda has actually turned to GM for help with their auto trannys. Good thing I have zero intention of getting an auto from anyone:p

That's why I have a manual in my Neon...

I would second that - the ONE negative about this car that I hesitated about before buying it was that it was an automatic. I REALLY wanted (and prefer driving) a manual.

I promised myself that my next car *WILL* be a "stick" ! ;)
