actually, if you want to operate at the chips actual speed, i found that if you go to "power options" in the control panel, and if you select "Minimal power management", the processor speed will go to the speed of your processor-- seems that intel links the power control panel to the cpu speed control

Yep, my bro just got it back my second one back, fixed by ECS. I'll have to wait until the weekend until its in my hands and I can see to get it working properly and running at 1.3ghz with speedswitchxp. ECS said they updated the bios and replaced defective parts.

BTW Rapo, try running it off the vga port to a CRT monitor. A person with a similiar laptop flashed his bios and same problem, but the vga port still worked so the flashed bios could some how messup the connection to the LCD monitor.

Naruto,
No luck! I got mine back from repair. Installed SpeedSwitchXP, which I used to set to Max Performance mode. Still shows 600Mhz. Just as I expected. Same CPU works ar full 1.6Ghz on other Centrino laptop. How about yours? Is it running at full speed now that you have SpeedSwitchXP?

Nope still 600mhz with speedswitchxp set to max.

Ggelfan,
Does your cpu run at fullspeed on other laptop, but not on the ECS G551? Methinks its the ECS laptop itself, may only be made to work 100% with retail chips.

Abhi,
is the fix available at that Dell link previously posted by you?

microsofts article about it

You can download is from here also...(possibly will be better coz it wont be dell specific)

My pentium M 2.4 ran only at 1200 mhz (even using sweedswitchxp), until i applied this patch.

hope it works for you.

Naruto,
Yes, that's right, my CPU runs full speed on other Centrino laptop. I tend to agree this is G551 specific problem and I think it has to do with limitations of BIOS.
BTW, memory runs at 266 instead of 333. What a junk!

Abhi,
Thanks for the link, but the fix doesn't want to install on non-Dell computer. Microsoft says about the fix, but doesn't let to download, not very helpful.

Does anybody know where I can download generic SpeedStep fix?

How can you tell the memory is running at 266? I also have two sticks of 333, but sisoft says they are only at 200. I figured this to be a problem with the cpu running at 600mhz only, maybe its part of the powersaving mode of speedstep. Even with the cpu at 600mhz, the laptop was able to score 5200 3dmark2k1 points. Hopefully with a fully functional retail cpu, it will be 7000 to 8000.

I think its the cpu and this laptop. Both me and ggelfan have some sort of sample centrino cpu and not a retail one. I bought mine off a guy on ebay who said he pulled it from a dell. And looking at the anandtech Dell 8600 review, it was also a "QS" labeled cpu found in the laptop. The ECS doesn't correctly utilize this stepping cpu that the Dell probably would. Luckily for me I just won an auction for a pentium M 1.7 on ebay for $75 and from the looks of the picture, its a retail cpu and not a ES, EQ, or QS labeled cpu. Hopefully it will work this time.
