Just in case you STILL haven't played FF7 (or don't know the plot points), consider this your spoiler warning (even though the original article had no such warning...).

No, I'm not some silly fanboy that just saw the E3 tech demo and didn't bother to read the "this will not be a PS3 game" disclaimer. Instead, I'm getting fresh news from this month's new issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly.

In a section titled "The Rumor Mill," there sits an interesting quote that very nearly puts butterflies in my stomach:

"Reliving the fantasy
If you were cruising the internets throughout the week of E3, you probably read about Square Enix's hot-to-trot Final Fantasy VII tech demo, which was shown during Sony's preshow conference to help convey the power of PlayStation 3. Unfortunately, you probably also read how Square's president denied that the footage meant a remake of its colossal PS1 role-playing game was not in the works. Put away the Kleenex, people; I've got it on very, very good authority that the company is indeed bringing a visually updated version of FFVII to PS3. Any other details? Well, Aerith still dies in this version, so maybe you should keep those tissues within arms reach."

Please forgive any errors, 'cause I'm typing this up in a hurry. Enjoy speculating!

They were supposed to remake FF VII, FF VIII, and possibly IX for the PS2 as well. It fell through then, and I wouldn't be surprised if it did again. If it does go through, cool, but if all that they change is the appearance I doubt I will bother with it.

I never believe any of the rumors that EGM lists every month. Over the past few months, I've delved into past issues up to 3 years old, and hardly any of the rumors ever come to light. From what I've been reading, I'm talking 95% never come true. One that sticks out in my mind is their "on good authority" list of PSP launch games. NONE of them have even come out yet, let alone launched with the system.

Rumors or not, it would be pretty smart if they did. A lot of people seem to want this to happen and would be willing to buy an updated FF7, and not to mention that it would be great for PS3 sales, which Sony would love.

Damn it to hell, now I have to get a PS3... Sh!t. Oh well. It'll be worth it to play FF7 again.

I also am in the doubters corner. But if it does happen, I'd buy it only if it's re-translated. Who knows how many story and character nuances were missed in the English version? Of course I'll miss "This guy are sick" and Barrett's "shocking" use word of the word "retard", but I think it would be for the best.

Wait, it's a Final Fantasy, nevermind the nuance comment. Still, the dialogue could use some help.

I agree about the translation... a reworking of the whole thing is practically required (perhaps voices from Advent Children included?), but ONLY if "this guy are sick" remains in the game!

"Very very good authorities" said there would be three versions of the next Xbox too and they were dead wrong

As long as Sephiroth is voiced by Christopher Walken, it's all good.

All the previous FF update projects were cancelled after the financial disaster that was the FF movie.

Some like that isn't likely to happen again.

Is there a US or at least a region free DVD version of Advent Children around yet?

The vast majority of people who know Final Fantasy began with FFVII. Possibly sad, but true. I am one of them.

There should be a new law, like Godwin's: no Final Fantasy thread may reach the second page without someone mentioning FF3/6 in a pretentious manner.

I like the game - Kefka and Ultros are great, but it really isn't that special. The internet cliche it has become has probably done more for its popularity than the game's own merits.

to each his own... but kefka and ultros is not what ff6 was about. that game had an EPIC storyline and each developed character has their past and motives.

The sheer magnitude of detail driven by just a couple of 2d sprites still amazes me.

and the soundtrack... god, that game had the most memorable music from my childhood.

I played ff 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,x,x-2 and ff6 still gets my vote for best ff ever :(

I've played all the FF's up till 7. I stopped there but I put hundreds of hours into 7. I loved the ones before this for the SNES and of course they are great too, but I if PS3 actually has FFVII remade I probably would get it for that sole reason.

FF6 and FF4 made the Final Fantasy name what it is. Both were epic. In that light, I don't even trust Square-Enix remaking them because I'm sure they would find a way to screw it up. I would like to see an FF7 remake mainly because of 2 reasons: Original translation was terrible and the graphics of the original FF7 was a very crappy time period where all games ended up looking like Quake1. Infact, anyone who has popped FF7 in recently would probably laugh at how bad the models are.

yeah the world map models are really simplistic (ball and cylinders basically... lol).

but the battle animations and summons are still pretty good to look at. love doing tifa's full combo... or summoning the bahamuts
