*UPDATE* 12/20

So, word has it that EA is now trying to snag exclisive rights to the NBA as well. Their first offer was rejected.....but how long can the NBA hold out with EA's big pockets.

it looks like Electronic Arts had even bigger plans as they also bid on exclusive arrangements with the NBA. Sources have told me, however, that the NBA has rejected EA's initial offer.

These five-year agreements -- which EA negotiated separately -- give EA the exclusive rights to the NFL teams, stadiums and players for use in its football videogames. Both agreements also include exclusive rights for console online features. Financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

For the first time, all aspects of the interactive experience -- including console-based fantasy football features and handheld game devices -- will be fully integrated with one EA game. This also provides the opportunity for new games and for EA to access both NFL Films and the NFL Network for use in the games.

Well well well. Looks like EA just got a slight advantage over the other publishers. This means that no one else can use the player names, stadiums or team logos...wow. This is a pretty big deal....especially for 5 years. What do you guys think?

i think its obvious they did this because they were really hurt by the ESPN $20 games. Only way to make people pay $50 is to be the only one who makes the games people want.

I used to be a Madden guy until a couple years back when I moved to the ESPN side. This is one sure way NOT to encourage me to switch back. Or buy any other EA Sports games, period.

Disgusting.

This makes me want to puke. I bought Pacific Assault a couple weeks ago and have really enjoyed it, but you know what, EA (not just the sports division), but any game made by EA, will never get another penny from me. This is absolutely disgusting. What a bunch of F'ing A-holes.

Spend a lot of money securing exclusive rights to the NFL license
or
Spend a lot of money refining the game and dropping prices to compete

Either way, it's the same amount of money out of their pocket, but the latter choice gives the middle finger to every other developer. Hmmm......real nice guys.

Who are you guys kidding though, you'll be in line to order Battlefield 2 just like everybody else. 😉

I can't believe the NFL agreed to this, doesn't seem like it would make a tremendous amount of sense to them. With only one game out, they might get less exposure on store shelves and such. And if that one game sucks, then all NFL games suck.

Its my understanding that the NFL is the one that put the deal on the table......EA won the bid. Reebok, Gatorade, and now EA all have exclusive rights to The NFL.

True, I hereby boycott every EA game except for BF2 :|

found this on shacknews:

Despite losing their NFL license due to the NFL's disdain for the Blitz series and EA's new exclusivity contract, Midway is hard at work on a football-related title. Called Blitz: Playmakers, the game revolves around the same setting that was used for ESPN's original series Playmakers. Midway has hired a writer of the show to help with the project and it'll feature all the hard-hitting drama that the show had; drugs, spousal abuse, and sexual situations. A Midway spokesperson told IGN, "Enough of the 'No Fun League' ... it's now time to talk about and prepare for the game the NFL wouldn't let anyone make ... Blitz the way it should be played."

I think this was a good move by EA for their interests.

First they didn't like the way MS set up X-Box Live and they were only forced into it by Sega's support of it and the success of their titles. Second they hated dropping their prices. With this contract they get rid of a competitor and they can now negotiate with Microsoft from a stronger position for supporting Live in the next Madden.
