Thanks for all the minivan info, but we didn't buy one... yay! :p

My wife was completely turned off by that 1999 Town & Country yesterday. Today we drove 35 miles to a dealer to look at a 1998 Grand Marquis GS with 36K on it for $10,000. Somebody had smoked in it, so it was nixed. Around the corner from there, was an original owner of a 1998 G. Marquis GS with 72K for $7,500. That was a fair deal and in good shape, so we kept it on the "might buy" list. Then we traveled 20 miles south to a dealer who had called me earlier about one they just took on trade yesterday. It's Carfax was clean. My wife liked it a lot! It's a 1999 Grand Marquis LS with 32K and they wanted $13,500 for it. We offered $13,000 out the door and they eventually took it. They even managed to get it washed and "detailed" the engine in the time it took to write it up! That picture was before they washed it.

Here's a funny part. We were about 45 miles from home. The guy who wrote up the paperwork and handles financing was a friend of the guy who bought the house next door to us! Our neighbor also handles financing at a local auto dealership. He replaced the guy who wrote up our car. Small world!

This wraps up a two week search and 45 Carfax checks. All in all, it was a challenge, but somewhat enjoyable. Even learned a thing or two about minivans, thank you! ;)

The price I got for the warranty from the dealer was $1,637 for 3 years, $100 deductable. A comparable warrenty from Autoshield is:
  • Stated Component coverage includes all the items listed under the PowerTrain Plus section, plus the items in this component group.

    DEDUCTIBLE
    .............................TERM $50 $100
    1 years / 12,000 miles - $888 $846
    2 years / 24,000 miles - $951 $903
    3 years / 36,000 miles - $1190 $1112
    4 years / 50,000 miles - $1520 $1406
I won't be buying it. Like I told the finance guy, "I picked a platform I can trust, so I'll take my chances." I've owned Lincolns and Grand Marquis in the past, so I'm not too worried.

You think that's bad freebee, you should see the car I just bought! :p

Our 65 year old salesman was laughing his ass off at the punk next to us at a light during the test drive. The kid had his seat reclined all the way back while he was driving. WTF was he trying to prove!? :D

"Chrysler's junk" is top rated, right behind the Honda Odyssey. I drove a rental during a week for service. It was a lot nicer than the one we drove yesterday. 2 years newer made the difference I guess. <shrug>

You know what's a pisser about those extended warranties? THE FINE PRINT! It's not so much what they cover, as what they don't. Here's an example. My wife's car has a squeal in one of the brakes right now. How would the coverage help in that case? Here's what components are covered under BRAKING SYSTEM:
  • ABS Control Unit
    Wheel Sensors
    Pump and Motor
    Accumulator
    Actuator Assembly
    Master Cylinder
    Vacuum/Hydraulic Assist Booster
    Wheel Cylinders
    Disc Brake Caliper
    Pistons and Seals
    Proportioning Valve
    Metal Hydraulic lines and Fittings
    Backing Plates
    Caliper Sliders
    Brake light Switch
    Fluid Level Sensor
    Bleeders
    Self Adjusters
    Brake Springs
    Actuating Lever
    Parking Brake Lever
    Parking Brake Ratchet Assembly
    Brake Accumulator
    Vacuum and Fluid Reservoirs
    ABS Pressure Warning Switch
That's only for the highest coverage. Everything from "Backing Plates" down is not covered by the lower tier plans. Don't forget the $50 or $100 deductible. So I take her car in for the squeal of the brakes. If they opt to swap out the pads, I'll end up paying full price for parts and labor. If they want to turn or replace the rotors, same thing, not on the list. I notice the flexible hydraulic lines aren't covered either... hmmmm

The things I've experienced failing on these cars in the past were, batteries, tires, exhaust, brakes and air conditioning. The A/C didn't seem to fail till after quite a few years. I have a feeling it won't fail till about two months after the extended warranty expires! :p

Wow talk about research. Good job. That's a great car size inside, confort, muscle and easily fixed. My wife refuses my attempts to buy one for her.. Wants a Kompreesor Mecedes. How practical/safe is that?@!?! Sorry had to get that out still fighting over it.

Hey you gonna drill out the CCs?

As far as the "extended warantee" goes they are ripoffs. Like all insurance, if you can afford to replace it don't carry it, becasue the actuarials show the customers loose in the long run. Especially with extended warantees where the marigins are so high and they don't cover jack when something actually does go wrong..

Kompressor Mercedes? Sounds like bucks to me! :Q
At least she doesn't want a minivan, LOL. If we were to buy a minivan, from anyone other than Honda, I'd probably buy some kind of extended warranty. Just don't trust those drive trains yet!

"Hey you gonna drill out the CCs?"
  • ??? ???
    Um... WTH is that?
The one thing that may get "upgraded" at some point is the intake manifold. At this point it has a resin based unit that's prone to cracking by the thermostat housing. I'm trying to track down some info about getting Ford to replace it free, but no luck so far...

Edit: Here's a picture of it all cleaned up. Just a big ole' cruiser, but apparently it's an adequate substitute for the minivan she wanted ;)

That sounded close. There's nothing worse than a minivan on the road with a soccer sticker on the back - and the female driver on a cell phone and not using her turn signals.

That Mercury looks Pimpin' - way to go! :)

Hey you should slam that car and put some reversed rims on it. That would be SOOOOOOOOO FLY;)

Going on personal experience, my 77 Town Car lasted me 20 years. Just took her on the last cruise this week. I've owned a few Grand Marquis and Town Cars. Cheap and easy to fix, rugged as tanks, ride smooth as silk. Never bought one newer than 5 years old till this one, and they never croaked in under several years. They're rated a "Used Car Best Bet" at Edmunds, Best Buy on Consumer Guide and sterling reviews all over the web! If you can live with the "grandpa-mobile" image, you won't find a better, safer bang for the buck.

Not real horrible as new cars go around 38K for the one she wants SLK230. But not practical nor roomy and only has around 190 horses.
Now If we had enough money for a S600 I'd say ok cool but this is just a name plate at this price point and not much car.

At least she doesn't want a minivan, LOL.
Yup. Funny how everyone hates em' ... now a full size van E-350 is cool but they no longer have it available in 4x4.\

"Hey you gonna drill out the CCs?"

Catalytic Converters ^^ gas mileage/power and still passes smog :)

If it aint broke... Killer thing about the GM/CV is it's basically the same drivetrain as the Mustang so most performance parts bolt right on:) and for the mustang there's tons of stuff out there.

Here's a picture of it all cleaned up. Just a big ole' cruiser, but apparently it's an adequate substitute for the minivan she wanted ;)

Looks brand new. I still can't belive you got that car sooo cheap. For example we just sold a 1998 Reagal GS (which has a new sticker of 26K) for 16,500 with 52,000mi. Yours has less mileage, is newer and cost the same new and you got it from a DEALER for only 13K. Amazing.

Hey, ViperMeister! Did you replace the centering ball or centering yoke on that drive shaft? I was looking at about $115.00 to replace both. Would have preferred to spend half that by determining which component was bad. I still can't believe you want to bring that puppy back to life. There's got to be a nice one in good shape out there for you somewhere!

Good luck either way!

Ah-hah, catalytic converters! Good idea Carbonyl, I'll remember that when it needs an exhaust. I've already decided to put a dual exhaust replacement on there when the time comes. I agree with not fixing it if it ain't broke, but it makes sense to upgrade at that point!

Looks brand new, eh? My wife keeps walking around it, picking at every little fleck of dirt and pointing out little blemishes

I keep telling her, "Damn, the things three years old!" She's so picky, but watch, she's the one who won't park it away from other cars... then she wonders how it gets dinged!
