*Update* Bought the suit.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I bought the suit today. It's an Alfani wool suit. Original price was $400 on sale at Macy's for $185.00 It's a 3-piece suit and I'll probably leave the vest at home during interviews. The color of the suit is a dark brown. You can't tell that it's brown to be honest. It has a very distinctive look which attracted me immediately. You have to see it in person.

I got wingtip black shoes to go with my suit. Very nice looking and they match up well with the full attire. The original price for the shoes were $110 and I got them for $65

With advice from the sales person, we both decided that when picking a shirt I should go with a solid color. I purchased a Calvin Kline light blue shirt. I like it. The shirt was purchased for $45 and it wasn't on sale. 🙁

I finally bought an Alfani belt and 2 t-shirt packs from the Gap. It cost me $30 and $24

If I add up the total= 185+65+45+30+24= $349+24 (alterations to suit)= $373 plus tax= $400 (give or take).

Thanks again all. I know there are going to be people that disagree with my choice of clothing but I like it and I guess that is what counts.

😀

Going to JC Penney/Macy's to get fitted is the first step. Don't buy it there unless they're running a really nice sale. Once you know your measurements go to Marshall's to look through the racks & try things on. Make sure to read the tags. Most items are just overstock, but one every now & then is irregular. If you are a bigger size, there are tons to choose from.

Well actually Macy's is having a nice sale for the next 3 days. I was just on their website and they have suits that were $450 on sale for $300. These are nice designer suits as well.

They also say pinstripe is in vogue. Has anyone worn pinstripe and how does it look on you?

Also, I'm average height.

I don't do pin strip, I have a nice black suit * not flat black textred, and a nice grey suit, black suit you can really make a statment with your tie an dshit combo, where as off color suits the tie and ****** and suit need to fit together, in other words a black suit is more useful to you if you only get one and is more classic i Think.

wow, usually there would be a dozen ATOT metro posts in here by now.

We're in the middle of giving one another pedicures.

We will arrive shortly. Thank you for your patience!

I picked up a nice suit from JC Penney's a month ago for a wedding. It was the same price range as you were looking and I got a great deal on it. It was on sale, plus, another 10% off for opening a penney's charge.

FWIW... I get all my suits from the Men's Warehouse.

Decent pricing, and they help pick out "accessories" as well.

The one's I've been too all have older guys that fit the suits etc, and some nice young ladies that help to pick out ties/shirts/etc.

I don't think I've ever spent more than $300 on the suit itself... probably average closer to $200.

Just my $0.02 (now that the pedicures are complete 🙂 )

Edit:

A 3 piece suit consists of a coat, vest, and pants, and I think would be to formal for an interview (for most jobs).

For an interview I think I'd stick with a "solid" color (no pin stripe) blue/black/grey, single breasted 2 piece suit.

If you have a Nordstrom Rack in your area, this is probably where you'll find your best deals. You can get a quality midrange suit (Joseph Abboud/Kenneth Cole-level) for under $300 there. I don't agree with the JC Penney's recommendation at all. The Macy's suits sound OK, but I think you will do better for the money with Nordstrom Rack. Sak's Off Fifth is also very good for higher-end stuff.

Forget Sears and 3-piece suits with pinstripes (its not 1920), unless you wanna look like Al Capone (3rd piece is a vest).

At MW, you can get the whole mess for about $300 (suit, shirt, tie, socks) and they'll alter it and cuff the slacks while you wait.

I just bought my first suit ever ... and I'm 30 years old 🙂 Too many weddings to borrow or rent this summer, and we figured it was time. It was about $400, and is made by a reputable designer.

for your price range, i would go to men's wearhouse. for interviews get a dark navy blue suit with little or no pattern. single breasted, 3 or 4 buttons. the 4 button is more modern. to be on the safe side, you might want to go for a 3-button suit. get a nice white shirt, dont get french cuffs because then you look pretentious. a tie that matches your suit, which should have some shade of blue.

i got lucky at men's wearhouse, got my pierre cardin 4-button single breasted suit for 200, was 800. good luck.

Fun stuff...over here in Europe 2-button is currently trendy/modern 😉

Winner.

Men's Wearhouse gets my vote too.

Very helpful at making sure you don't look like an a$$ and good prices.

I am not good at picking out clothes.. they are!

I only have one suit (bought it after graduating college 1.5 years ago), I still wear it on interviews and always get complements. I got a Calvin Kline suit from Macy's..I think it was $350 or $400 for the set. It's really comfy...

some general suggestions:

-charcoal or navy blue color for a main suit. no pinstripes for a suit in your price range because chances are the stripes won't align at the seams.
-natural fibers (wool, most likely). maybe a blend is ok if it's 95% or higher wool, but stay away from polyester blends. the cheap 'sheen' of polyester blends is unmistakable.
-2 or 3 button jacket, pleated or flat front pants - your preference depending on body type.
-make sure the shoulders fit right, since that part generally can't be altered (without great expense)

men's wearhouse can hold you over for the interviews. but once you start working, you are gonna need like 6 more suits that should be bought elsewhere, like barney's, brooks brothers, or if you are really balling, bergdorff goodman

Don't go cheap, you'll regret it later. Go to Brooks Brothers and go for a dark grey 2-button. Should be in your budget, maybe slightly higher, but it's quality and well worth it.

i've gotten a few suits from the brooks brothers outlet store. normal price of a suit is $300, but i've gotten them for $225-250 during sales. the fabric quality (97% wool/3% lycra) is very good for the money.
