I always wonder why people are so hesitant to call the police in the matters.
This is why you pay taxes.
I mean seriously, what do you want to do, go to his house and beat him up?

Is this a case where you actually have the van in your possession but didn't due your due diligence? If you handed money over to someone and got nothing in return (like the $2800 van at the exchange), then you are truly naive.

A simple google will explain in detail the best way to buy from a private party. I usually do the exchange of money right at the bank or DMV if I am getting the title.

I got a cell phone number and I need this guys full name and address and was hoping someone can help me because I got taken for $2800 and I need to track him down.

The number is : 731-363-1706 first name is James and thats all I got.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!

You know, there's this thing called "police" that are trained and have special tools to be able to handle this kind of thing.

They're brand new, though, so check and see if your city has one yet. :sneaky:

Why would you recommend he call a number meant only for emergencies?

haha yes try calling emergency about swindle theft (that's what this is called) and see what happens.

it has to do with that van. Says clear title but was not. It was a repo and because so they want repo papers I cannot provide. So till I do fart papers out my ass they will not put it in my name so, Im screwed and he knows this Im sure. We were going to go on vacation next month to visit my wifes father who had a stroke but looks as though this will never happen.

they gave you a title that appeared clean but wasnt?

damn

generally, if you are not sure, get the VIN before hand and call the police and have them run it, they can tell you very little, but will probably tell you if it was repod and will certainly let you know if its stolen.

I always get a vin for nonlocal stuff and have it ran, but I guess that doesnt keep me from getting screwed locally.............:\

Who did you buy the van from, thr registered owner or the folks who repo'd it?

If you bought it from the registered owner, you should be able to back track him through your DMV.
If he legally didn't have the right to sell the van...you may be able to press charges with the police.

If you bought it from the company who repo'd the van, they should be able to sign off for the necessary paperwork.

I really question the intelligence of ANYONE who'd buy a vehicle without getting all the necessary contact info of the seller or having all the proper documentation (title, registration, etc.) in hand BEFORE giving them the cash...and having everything properly notarized.

Exactly!! Looks like we all need to say--serves you right.....but good luck anyways!!

You didn't even ask for his last name? LOL. If HIS name wasn't on the Title he gave you, that should have been an immediate red flag.

How exactly does a person purchase a used vehicle without getting:

1) the title
2) a bill of sale with the seller's information
3) a Carfax history report

It's very simple: Person A gives Person B cash. Person B gives Person A a used vehicle.

carfax is really useless if it comes up empty, there could still be major work done and never reported, even at a dealership.

except in the ops case where the question wouldn't have been whether the vehicle had work done, but whether the title was clear - in that case it would have been very useful

This is what I've done. Carfax is worth the $20 just to cover any glaring issues. Bill of sale with seller's driver's license. Break yours out for him, too, so that you feel more comfortable and less acusatory, and the title.

I want to know if buyer of van in this thread ever had the title and what did it say? Surely he received the actual title for a van paid for with cash, right?

And, don't call the cops. Too easy.

Of course, but it's not useless if it didn't come up empty. It doesn't guarantee the vehicle is fine but it does cover a lot of cases, certainly it's worth the $20

still not...only if it's been reported.

On a $2800 van I'd assume you'd have your title in hand.
