UPDATE: Athlon 64 3200+ combo for $199at Fry's

UPDATE 12-22-04
Fry's final Christmas flyer caught me by surprise today. Especially since it had this combo for $30 less than I paid last week. Just got back from there and did the price guarantee with no problem. Not a bad Athlon 64 setup for under $200 with no rebates.

The mobo is an ECS 755-A2, which AT gave a favorable review early this year. One warning, though.... It would not work with my AIW 7500. I had to upgrade my graphics card unexpectedly.

FROM LAST WEEK:

I've been holding out on upgrades for a couple of months, waiting until after Christmas. But, Fry's has this A64 3200+ combo this weekend for $229 (cheapest I've seen it). I was planning on going for a 3200+ anyway. Think it'll get better if I wait until after Christmas?

I'm sure it's a socket 754 at that price, but I'm cool with that. I don't overclock anyway, and I don't mind being a half step behind the bleeding edge. Plus, I'd like to avoid buying new memory right now if I can. Think my current PC2700 DDR would run on this board?

All comments and opinions appreciated....

I think it is a pretty good deal. They had the same combo for $219 on Black Friday when I purchased mine, but I paid the extra to get the MSI K8N NEO motherboard instead of the ECS POS.

If you are not worried about keeping on the cutting edge then these are pretty good deals. I personally usually upgrade my computer about once every 2-3 years at most. Before I purchased this deal I was running on a PII 400 (after my PIII 1 Gig system crashed) so I needed an upgrade pretty bad.

if you arnt concerned about upgrading then its fine.

Its socket 754 for sure, and its an ECS motherboard.

I went ahead and got the MSI Combo as well ( but not from frys) and ordered online.. it was like 15 more than frys (after tax) .... Frys wants $289 i think for the MSI and 3200+ 754 combo. I went ahead and got the MSI K8N NEO PLATINUM motherboard and the AMD 3200 WInchester (90nm) cpu for $336 with free 2 day shipping.... i ordered on sunday but the 3200 chip has went up about 15 dollars already

It should be a good deal... The board is an ECS 755-A2, which AT reviewed quite well. I've not had problems with the ECS boards I get from Fry's. Then again, I am not overclocking terribly much, or doing any weird stuff. I jumped on the $75 Sempron 2400+ with an ECS KT600 board, and it works like a charm at 2GHz, 400FSB, with the $69 DDR400 Kingston ram I got at BB. With a good Radeon it makes a great HTPC 🙂

It's a good deal for that processor, BUT I would recommend buying a 2800 or 3000 from Newegg and a board of your choice for just a bit more. It will be a better system and Newegg is much easier to work with that Fry's if you have any problems. I just bought a 2800 and a Chaintech board for like $210 and it OC'd easily to 2300 with just a retail heatsink.

I checked out this deal too, except its with a dfi lanparty ut for 289 bucks...not too bad of a deal as that's a 120-140 dollar mobo and a 190-210 dollar cpu.
The ecs mobos aren't bad as long as you dont plan on ocing or anything like that. I've read some good reviews of those ecs 754 boards.

Personally i would go with a retail box 3000+ 939 pin for 150 at newegg and the cheapest 939 board you can find.

I never had any problems with Fry's. I love the fact that I can just drive there and get my stuff exchanged if it doesn't work and the 30 day return policy works very well for me.

Agree, but I hate waiting in the return/exchange line.
