Sully,

Something to think about would be a script that would check a list of connected servers and send the upload to that specific one, then return the correct URL.

JUst an idea, I know nothing about programmign

The extra programming involved to make this into a distributed client sort of deal isn't really worth it. We could just set up the script at a number of sites and people could base where they want their pics hosted on their own ping to each site.

I figure an initial 2 meg limit for each account, but that can easily be changed by anyone with access to the code on the site. As to IP addresses, I'll build in IP logging on registration and on each upload. The webadmin can then add that IP to a master IP ban list that's checked on user registration. Ditto for e-mail addresses. That cover everything?

I can help with the server if my parents let me leave my computer on all day and all night. They don't want me to have my computer running all the time. Anyone have any ideas on how to convince them?

I have a ftp and an http server all set up. It's http://pweiss.dyndns.org/. But it's going to be hard to convince my parents, so maybe not. I could definetely run a part-time server for image hosting though.

It looks like we are getting the servers. I might not even need to build mine. We shall see how the loads on the servers are. I'm still more than willing to help admin the servers, though, as well as build mine if the server response isnt as good as we would like.

UPDATE: 0sully has a layout of what the upload page will look like. The final page/script should be done in a week or so. Here is the preliminary page. 0sully is asking for anyone with a *nix webserver with CGI working for testing uses. Anyone?

<< Hey, your page doesn't show any pics! How ironic is THAT?! ;) >>

But look at the names of the most recent uploaded pics... I'm sure you wish those links worked.

Bump, because the script is 95% complete. I just need to do the following:

1. Make sure users can't upload using pre-existing filenames, that throws the user account size meter out of wack.
2. Safely allow users to delete files they've uploaded.
3. Allow users to change their password. Right now a random password is assigned to you and sent to the user via e-mail.
4. Maybe write a better IP/e-mail address ban routine? Not really a priority right now.

So where are all of those Unix-based Perl/CGI-enabled servers for me to start setting things up? :)

I'm going to be changing my web hosting company soon and I'll be able to hopefully set something up.

Is there any way to limit how many files are uploaded? I'll have a good deal of space, but I want to make sure that I don't go over and get charged for it.

Also, is there anyway that we can make it so that only people from AT's domain can see the pics? I'm worried something may get linked elsewhere and could also cause extra charges on my account for transfer limits.

If I'm just being too paranoid, let me know. :p

Put me down for a server and/or an admin. I can either run a server on my P4 1.9ghz or my Cassiopeia E115 Pocket pc.

I am not completely sure if I can run a server.

Btw, I'm on a cable connection, so my upload speed is limited to 128kbps (about 15kB/s), so I don't know if it would be worth it for me to run a server.
