this is a pretty decent deal. I also saw another thread for the s157 going around for 699.

It looks like the s177 is not a mobile celly and so the processor difference breaks down like:

s177 = 128kb L2 cache (1.1 ghz) - normal celly
s157 = 256kb L2 cache (1.06 ghz) - mobile celly

the s177 has a bigger hd and nic i believe though. i did remember reading on consumerreports and epinions that the non mobile processor laptops get very very hot on the underside.

you can spam on amazon and get a s157 you are lucky - i did (then cancelled it)

This is weird I already had the Toshiba 1805-S177 in my cart (from a few days) ago, so I clicked ADD TO CART to reveal the price and it shows $899.99 so I thought everyone here was smoking something whack. So I emptied my cart, went back to the 1805-S177 and clicked ADD TO CART well whaddya know it now shows $999.99

I just got this S177 laptop on Friday for $899 at BB B&M store. Not bad, it also includes TV-Out, which BB doesn't advertise anywhere. Nice Surprise :) It does get pretty hot on the underside, though.

So, if you had it in your cart last week, when it was $899.

Now you can get it for $899-100= $799!

HOT DEAL!!!

Why did you have to say that? I just paid $900... I don't want to hear that. :p

<< Hi CK,

How hot does the underside become after 2 hours of use? Does it bother?
>>

Well, it got to me on Friday night after a few hours, wasn't checking to see exactly how long but I'd guess it was between 2-4 hours it started to bother me. We were having exceptionally warm weather (for winter) here in Southeast Pennsylvania, that may have added to it. I eventually just put a board under the laptop on my legs and it was fine after that.

As for the performance, it seems a little sluggish, but I'm used to my AMD 1700+ desktop. I'm thinking of nuking the XP Home and putting Win2K on there. Hopefully it will go faster without all the unnecessary fluff.

Thanks CK!

Another question I have is: how can I tell whether it's mobil or non-mobil celly? What about the 1805-S207? Thanks.

I believe from reading the other thread (there was another about the $699 laptop deal which is now dead) that the celerons which have the 133 fsb are the mobile celerons while the ones with the 100 fsb are the desktop celerons. Considering this is 1.1 ghz (100 fsb x 11) and add to it the way that the bottom will heat up, I'd say this is a desktop celeron.

I'm really enjoying mine, I don't plan on running many processor intensive applications - that's what my power desktop is for - but this will do everything I need it to do (Notes, browsing, portable DVD playback along with TV-Out)

Hope this helps,

CK

I don't think it does.
The mobile Celeron can go up to 1.2, but this is a 1.1, not a 1.13.
So it most likely is not a mobile.

Exactly... I'm certain it has a 100 mhz fsb, which means that it is a regular celeron which explains why it heats up.

Sorry mousetail, just saw this part of the question:

<< What about the 1805-S207? >>

It looks like the exact same notebook but with a DVD/CD-RW combo drive, which means a regular celeron. $100 difference after MIR.

Even though the 177 has the crapier processor I still think it is the better deal. The 177 still has the better battery, better video, bigger hd, nic, and video out going for it. Ordered mine on the 13th and missed the UPS guy yesterday. Hopefully I'll get it today. I'm using a P120 laptop right now, so weight and heat doesn't matter to me because anything I get will be better than what I've got!

When you click on the rebate, it said "NOT DEFINED"

So, I don't know if you can still get the rebate.

Also, on the Bestbuy's home page, it stated a $200 rebate. Is there another rebate $100 rebate around?

How does this laptop do in 3D? I realize it is a very cheap laptop and does not have that powerful of a 3D chip behind it. I guess what I'm asking is does it run Counter-Strike ok at 640x480?

I realize this is not a gaming laptop, but it'd be cool to take it home from college and get a little CS in :).

What about openGL support? Is it there? I remember reading something about Trident not having GL support.
