UPDATE 7/19, thx waggy: Man, 34, surrenders in attempted abduction of girl

Police arrested a man today and charged him in the attempted abduction of a 10-year-old girl in South Philadelphia that was caught on surveillance cameras on Tuesday.

Carlos Figueroa-Fagot, 34, surrendered to police about midnight at the urging of his family and fearful of the pressure generated by publicity of the case.

"He felt he couldn't walk, talk or breathe on the streets," said Capt. John Darby, commander of the Special Victims Unit.

"This defendant knew he could not keep walking the streets," said Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey.

The girl and her 2-year-old brother were on their way to buy water ice at a corner store on Tuesday when the man pounced on Lee Street in the Whitman neighborhood.

City officials on Wednesday announced a $10,000 bounty for the capture and conviction of the would be kidnapper.

The surveillance video shows the man pulling up in a white car on Porter Street near Lee and watching the children turn the corner onto Lee Street before getting out of the auto car and following them.

Another camera captured the scene as the man crept up on the children and picked up the girl up before trying to run away with her.

The man dropped the girl as she struggled and he tried to pick her up again before giving up and heading back to his car.

The video went viral after its release Wednesday and gained national attention this morning on TV network morning programs.

If this reaches the FBI, they should be able to gather a lot of intel from this clip. Face scan, accurate height / weight estimation, you name it. If they can read a license plate from a satellite in space, they can get some leads on this mofo. Hope they do & prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. Life in prison would be a good start.

Pure Parental Rage. Stories like this are why I would never allow my kids to walk anywhere alone [out of site]. Let's hope the bastard is caught and sent to prison where he'll be "judged".

If she's found dead, does that mean the kidnapper was afraid for his life and had a justification for shooting her?

They can? Link?

The article says they're walking home from the store. She's 10 years old, not 5. I think it's completely normal.

Did you not see how sketchy those streets looked?? Granted, I know a 10-year-old is a bit more aware so I don't think sending them to the store is completely odd. I guess I wouldn't let them go by themselves if I was one of their parents.

Helicopter parent alert. 😡

Different times man. I am not offended at being called a helicopter parent. I'd rather do that than run the risk of my kid being abducted. IMO 10 y/o tugging a 2 y/o along alone is not great parenting.

Different times man.

Different times HOW? The US violent crime rate now is lower than it was when I was 10, and I was all over the place at that age. The only difference is the media and Internet shoving stories like this in everyone's faces, and everyone assuming "OMG kids are getting stolen all the time!" Denying your children a normal childhood because of fearmongering is a tragedy, not responsible parenting. Your child is far more likely to be injured in a car accident while you are right there with them than to be abducted.

Go outside and play in that thunderstorm, little Billy. Don't worry, you're more likely to be injured in a car accident with me than stuck by lightning!

...:hmm:

Yeah, when I was a boy, it was completely different.

When I was out of school for the Summer, the vast majority of the time, my parents had no idea where I was during the day. I roamed far and wide and rarely got into any trouble. My Mom would only have been concerned if I failed to show up at the table for dinner, which never happened. Lunch was a meal I sometimes showed up for, but often not.

My friends were the same way. Our parents did not watch us closely at all, and for the most part, there were no problems.

I waited at the bus stop by myself, was let off the bus to go home by myself, etc.

In the earlier days, when I did not ride the bus, I walked to school by myself, and walked home by myself.

Most kids did the same.

Pocket knives were commonly carried, even at school. Nobody stabbed anyone, robbed anyone, or even thought about either, as far as I know.

Times are different, but I'm not sure why.
