After finishing up the nForce2 roundup a couple days ago, I've decided to conclude our 845PE coverage with a 13-way roundup this month. I feel this 845PE roundup will serve as a good reference for people looking for P4 boards over the next 3 months, as Intel's successor to 845PE (Springdale PE) won't be arriving until Q2 2003, which means April 1st at the very earliest. Perhaps Granite Bay will become significantly cheaper soon, we'll have to see, but since Granite Bay has been targeted as a workstation chipset (at a workstation price) from the outset, I suspect that the first real affordable dual channel DDR Intel chipsets won?t be arriving until Q2 2003 with Springdale-P/PE/GE (Canterwood will take over the spot 850 currently occupies).

Anyway, as should be expected, our 13-way 845PE roundup will include the seven other 845PE reviews we've done so far, but we'll be adding six other 845PE boards, which includes IWILL, ABIT, Albatron (PX845PEV Pro II), DFI, Acorp, Soltek, Soyo and Chaintech. So hopefully, by posting this roundup, you guys will only have to refer to a single article for all the 845PE info you could want. :D

Here's a couple new things I'll be adding to this article off the top of my head:

1. A table illustrating how the 845 has changed since it debuted as a PC133-only part over a year ago.
2. Comparison to SiS 648 and VIA P4X400 (perhaps E7205 too) in terms of performance, price, features, overclockability, etc.

What else would you guys like to see? All suggestions are welcome.

On a side note, as of right now I'm in the middle of preparing for finals, so you won't be seeing too many new things in the next two weeks or so. For the month of December and into mid-January, don't expect to see more than an 845PE roundup, a SiS 655 first look article and an nForce2 IGP first look article. And FYI, as of right now, KT400A, P4X600 and SiS 655 look to be February products, which is why you won?t see much into January (except perhaps 655).

I'll update this thread with stuff I decide to include in the roundup as time goes on.

Evan:

This is exciting. Here is a list of my requests:

1. A chart comparing dividers available, max FSB overclock you got with one,two and three banks populated and vcore/vdimm/vagp voltages
2. A test(s) to compare sound quality of the boards (S/N ratio etc.)
3. SPDIF IN/OUT capabilities (header availability and if bracket has been included)

Thanks

1. I would like to see some testing done on sounds quality just like P4spooky said
2. And when you overclock if you get any cold boot syndrome
3. See some mem testing being done with Memtest86

Thanks :)

Adding to what Phoenix of Water said, I'm sure you have noticed that many of us here with the 845G and PE boards are suffering from a cold-boot syndrome. It would be great if you would crank up the voltage to a safe level (say 1.7) with aggressive memory ratio (like 3:4) and see if any of these boards do not exhibit the "cold-boot syndrome."

Also, I remember when you used to do roundups you included a large table at the end where we could see specs listed (features, voltages, overclocks, etc.) so we could compare them all from one spot. It would be great to have those back.

It sounds like you have thought of everything else. Looking forward to reading it!

Also please include "apples to apples" benchmark numbers for at least one set of similar i845D / i845E / i845G / i845GE / i845PE boards
i.e.:
Abit BD7 (i845D)
Abit BD7-II (i845E)
Abit BG7 (i845G)
Abit BG7E (i845GE)
Abit BE7 (i845PE)

ALL at FSB133/DDR266. The reason I ask is that it has been documented that previous-generation i845E boards were slower than i845G, due to the i845G having a newer memory controller. I recall seeing data that shows that the i845PE isn't any faster than the i845E boards, but others have reported higher benchmark numbers. If this issue could be settled with as many other variables (FSB, memory speed, manufacturer, etc) locked, that would show some worthwhile numbers.

The "i845PE is faster because it can do DDR333" is meaningless, since it shows an extra capability of a chipset, that one may or may not use, instead of just performance. Kind of like comparing a runner wearing high-tech sneakers and someone running barefoot - the playing field isn't level.

id like to know if there really is a 167fsb stability limit on these boards or not ;) :)

the cold boot problem should be looked into also.

Odeen makes a very good suggestion Evan. In benchmarks it seemed that the 845G did have a superior memory controller to the 845e when both weree @ PC2100, and It wasn't documented the diff now between 845PE and GE, etc.

I like the idea. I would like you to toss in the best via p4x400(soyo cough cough, thats the only one lol) and maybe the 2 best Sis 648 preformers, and maybe a GB or 2 in the mix(if you aren't doing that already). P4 buyers are having a tough time and I would appreciate a roundup (i'm getting sick of staring at this 2.53 p4). A PE board i've been curious about is the new soyo PE board, I noticed it on Soyo's site http://www.soyousa.com/products/proddesc.php?id=192. I've always been a big soyo fan and I was wondering if a review of this board would be possible in the roundup or seperately. I'm looking forward to see how the 2 new p4 chipsets will fare. BTW, I appreciate how you always ask for reader feedback, its one of the nice features of this site.

And please do not rush the testing - do it thoroughly - most review sites have a board for 24 hours after which they have to pass it on to the next kid on the block.
At this point I am not sure why we want to see 845D E G chipset comparison anymore. Definitely Sis648 and 655, Granite Bay and Nforce 2 to liven up things a bit. People considering MB purchase should look ahead not back.
Comments on the BIOS (beta or final) would be appreciated.
Keep up the good work.

Two things:
1) The i845G may still be a faster mhz for mhz chipset than the i845PE, if the i845G's memory controller hasn't been implemented in the PE.
2) Benchmarks against older boards are useful because they're a good upgrade indicator for owners of the older motherboards. If, mhz for mhz, the i845PE is no faster than an i845D/i845E, then the only reason to upgrade is new features. If it is actually faster, then that's a good merit for an upgrade.

Do you have an engineering sample unlocked P4 that can run at high speed?
Its great to compare overclocks using a single known processor.

I second Thugs on the cold boot issues. Many i845-D boards had this issue and seems the problem is hanging on through every revision since.

Get somebody drunk and make them talk. I'll help with the bar tab.

A table comparing available dividers and whether boards support vcore/dimm/io increase, and how large an increase would be great
Also please note whether or not the boards offer a pci agp ratio lock. Also please note at what clock speed the dividers become available at. I recently purchased the ABIT BE7-RAID and i was quite surprised to discover that a ratio offering 100:166 fsb:mem was not available and that ddr333 was only offered on cpus that had a default fsb of 133.
Also, when you make up those nice looking charts, please throw in the top performing solution from the competition for comparison. in this case AMD and nforce2. i realize that this is not a fair comparison as the 845pe/ge are single channel ddr boards. but when i read the reviews i look at it as if i was going to build a new machine (as i use the information provided here to recommend to customers who ask me what the best system they can buy is) so being able to look at how a solution based on intel technology fares against a solution from amd is important to me.

i feel that the onboard sound needs to be given much more attention as it seems every motherboard these days has a 5.1 channel solution integrated yet the chip chosen to power that solution varies widely. since they are designed to replace your mainstream discrete soundcards, please treat them as such and give them the same attention.

other than that i couldnt be happier with the greatness that is anandtech. keep up the good work!

I love a quiet PC, so I am interested to see in the chart a list of the mobos that can control the case and cpu fans speed, even power supply fans, according to the temperature, and how well they do that.
Since I don't do gaming, and I use my PC for internet browsing, music listening and downloading, and some word processing, then all the mobos are good enough for me, as long as they reliability overclock without crashing or having cold boot problems, a good onboard sound is a plus, since I wont have to put in my SB Live.
So my criteria for choosing one will be speed, stability, good sound and fan control.
Thanks

I would be pretty interested in seeing the gigabyte one, the one with the serial ata too (the ultra 2, not just ultra). It's harder to find right now, but I found it on mwave for less than 150 bucks. It seems a lot different than the other gigabyte models

Also, when doing Abit, are you going to do the BE7, or the IT7 Max2 ver. 2?
I am pretty interested in that too.
The IT7 seems to have a lot more, so maybe you should consider that

The Ultra 2, the IT7 Max2 ver. 2, and the P4PE are the ones I'm looking at, but after the THG review, the albatron and aopen are appealling too. I hope this article can help me decide

Definitely compare it to the Granite Bay chipset. You should definitely show what users are gaining/loosing when compared to a Granite Bay chipset.

I like the idea of the graph of the first 845 to the latest generation.

I totally agree with Odeen's idea on having a whole family of one board brand compared.

This review is looking less and less interesting now as time marches on. I have now acquired the MSI 845PE Max and the Asus P4PE-L so it no longer interests me but if it contains GB/Springdale it may still be of some use yet.

Evan, You're probably a great guy:) but you are always months late with your reviews and round-ups..
They are passe by the time you get ready to do themand they are ancient history when you finish.
Thanks for allthe effort anyway:)

Do you know of any other web sites that have covered 7 845PE boards in detail and will be doing more than twice as much soon?

Didn't think so. ;) :)

I recently read 2 pieces of info that could make the reivew die before it happens:
1. At Lostcircuits - The real P4chipset to be shooting for now is Springdale or desktop successor to GB
2. Source - (forgot) PE chipset from Intel is an interim stopgap (keeping the cash coffers filled) until GB and its successor
Add to this numerous cold boot problems of the PE chipset and poor overclockability.
