Ok..many have seen I got a 0534 MPMW 165...I installed this on a DFI SLI DR using a SI 120..so temps have been good

I use bios 623-2, same ram as sig....same setup except the cpu..same winxp install
I installed hotfix, amd driver

I did initial testing...only thing I can not recall is when I pushed my ram back on 5/6 divider to 237....

I ran on Mon/Tues Prime 95 dual core using 2 separate Prim95.exe in separate folders, setp cpu affinity for each core via Prime..even did it in task manager....stopped Prime 95 at just under 13hrs(165@2610 ..9x 290 vcore 1.46 bios...I just can not recall my ram settings..not sure if I was still running a 133 divider)..so I figure 2610 is a rock OC

Anyway..at some point midweek??? just not sure when..maybe it was Mon

I have set ram to 5/6 divider=237 same ram timings..ran memtest86 for 10 passes..6hrs...no errors

So I was still trying to get 2650+..just a no go..gave up

Anyway, I get home Friday..I decide that 2610 is fine..time to fine tune stuff..I install 1.1 net framework to run ATI cat 5.13..as these have better dual core support

Saturday I rerun prime 95 on both cores...anyway..it runs for 9hr 57 min and cpu 0 dumps out..huh..never crashed before at 2610....BTW I did run memtest 86 the night before for 6hrs prior to running this round of Prime 95

I saw some issues maybe ram related with 166/180 divider so I loosened timings and lowered mhz

so recheck settings and loosen ram timing so max async latency is 9ns and preamble is 7ns as some opteron per DFI prefer this...Set 2610, ram 237...and couple hrs later run at night..wake up today and cpu0 now died at 4.5 hrs...WTF....

Ok..I wait few hrs this am
Change setup so ram is at 3/4 divider or 217....I setup SP2004..all is well for 2hrs +...then I decide maybe I am not doing it right..stop...create 2 separate folders of it, set cpu0 & cpu 1 each with no affinity unchecked....and it dies in 25 min on core 1...I did have a couple power surges...one time no issue..so I ignored 2nd one....

I am at a loss as to why all of sudden Prime is dying sooner and sooner at 2610..

In all of this I have kept vcore at 1.46bios...no reason that I can see as to why I should have problems at 2610

Is it possible all the tinkering and testing (trying to get 2650/2700 at higher bios vcore of 1.5-1.52v)......has "hurt 2610 as stable speed"

could be net framework and videodrivers??

I ram spysweeper and antivirus..with no issues, defrag HDD

Crap....I wonder if I should reinstall winxp, ugh

any thoughts or insight would be great...mind the only bios changes made have been to ram and cpu....nothing else..I have recheck everything like 5 times

Try the ram at really loose timings say 2.5, 4, 4, 10 with a really low divider say 133 this should take the ram out of the equation and test again. Up the voltages another .025v to the CPU. What are your CPU temps like?

I understand that is an option...but why would a chip that was stable with dual prime 95 small fft for 13hrs all of sudden fail prime 95

my temps at dual Prime 95 100% load are 46-48C...

FYI: this same ram was 100% stable for 15hrs of small and large fft and 6hr memtest with my venice @250 3-3-3-7-1t.....so I know ram can do the speeds but for some reason the Opteron does not like it...

very strange..anyway..I am going to rollback to my winxp setup just prior to putting the Opteron...install the amd driver and hot fix and test allover ...if this fails I will reload winxp...maybe my testing corrupted a file....

I was smart enough to remove my HDD with my backup

I thought about that..but why would it Prime 95 13hrs fine...then go to pot...should we Prime every few days to know our system is still stable...

I honestly can't answer that question...and I think it would be very hard to catagorically say it is the CPU causing the problem - We take for granted that such complex systems can be diagnosed easily when we are dealing with billions of components!

I did have a similiar problem: Winnie 3000+ overclocked to 2.52Ghz which ran stably for 9 months no problem - then stability problems, had to drop it to 2.4Ghz for stability - changed the PSU and could overclock to 2.6Ghz. TRY ANOTHER PSU.

Another thought is that my MOBO temperatures rose by about 7oC underload when I changed to dual-core - no suggestions other than better cooling to the mobo.

I doubt that your OS installation will effect Prime95 but a clean install is usually a good thing.

could be your psu.....are you running under a ups since you mentioned you had a couple power surges...

I have a Powerstream 520w that is 1 year old and powered the system in my sig with no hiccups..so unless this started having a nissue my psu is not it

I do have a UPS on the system..the surges were very small last 1-2 sec today...UPS could be an issue..if a surged damaged it but I have no evidence

I would strongly consider the psu but this thing is like a rock, infact it lowered temps and provided stabilty to my overclock when I installed 1 yr ago...I just can not accept the the psu at this point..no reboots, no lockups, the 3 lights in the back remain green..voltage nevers varies on any line or to the vcore...

I have no reason to suspect in the last 3-5 days my PSU went bad

I can not imagine that the cpu took a dive with little testing and very small bumps in vcore...I watched the Priming not unusually temps may temp I got was 53-54C

It could be the ram and the opteron are not happy..I went back to my OS setup just prior when it Primed fine..reinstalled AMD drivers and hot fix, ran a registry cleaner and cleaned up some little junk, lowered ram back to 133 divider 3-3-3-7-1t when it primed fine

going to leave the computer off for a bit..it has only been on for 30min in last 5 hrs...at about 7pm I will fire everything up and hope it was a software issue or ram...

the ram is crucial valuram 2 x 1gb but has tested very well....

All the components are the same in my sig except for the Opteron 165 and new SI 120/w nexus fan....those parts with this cpu did prime 95 for 13hrs without and issue I stopped it becasue I was going to work and like to around to check every hour or so except at night to make sure everything is ok

You can suspect all you want, but if you don't test it you'll never know...
Could even be your X800... Suddenly went bad and overheats for no apparent reason?
Sounds more like PSU though (like others said as well). Try running p95 on only one core at a time. Test both cores at 15+ hours. Then you'll get your answer.

no temps issues on the X800XL..I checked them idle temp sits at 37C

Now give one good reason to suspect my PSU dying over the last 3 days with no symptoms get Prime 95

No windows instabilty, no reboots, no voltage flucuations...everybody blames the PSU ...

Sorry I can not buy my 1 yr old PSU that worked 100% fine 1 week ago has all of sudden without a single warning sign...

FYI: when Prime failed at the 10hr mark on cpu0...Core1 was running Prime95 for total of 12 hrs...when core 0 died at 4.5hrs..core 1 was running at around 11 hrs

I'm pretty sure its heat issues. Take the side pannel off. Blow a huge fan on the HS/Fan. I know your running XP-90, but the X2s run hot. I had similar problems. I could run at 2.64 just fine, but I had to take off the side pannel and put a huge and fast fan next to it in order to prime stable at 2.7GHZ on my previous X2.

Edit: I'm pretty sure that the PSU is not the culprit. People blame Psus too often, when it is not the case.

you said you have a ups, does it have AVR, and what brand? I'm asking this because it could possibly be the power surge that damaged some component...

OK..it is not heat unless a load temp of 46-48C is bad, not dust or humidity..I am using a 1 week old SI 120 w/nexus fan..so no dust buidup yet...

The surge protector is APC 725..1 yr old..I have no idea if it has AVR(in Tampa, FL we get surges all the time..but these were for 1-2 sec very small and not the type even without a UPS will turn off electronics but you get a flicker and there is always as risk of course

Anyway..it looks like it was either video driver update or my ram

I am running dual Prime 95 as per the directions here
http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showpost.php?p=158518&postcount=1

I have now run Dual Prime 95 small fft for 12hrs ...max temp is 48C(46-48)

I am leaning toward the ram timings..despite the fact they @250mhz 3-3-3-7-1t was memtest 86 stable on my venice(as stated for 15hrs small, large ffts) I am not sure the opteron like these timings at 237 or 5/6 divider..also last night I noticed a DRAM strength was set to fast...not normal

So..my apologies but I should have reran Prime 95 first with lower ram timings..I am moron to assume the same ram timings would be work with the Opteron...I may have been stable but at the edge with the Venice and the Opteron has some issues per DFI street with 166/180 dividers for some...I still wonder whether my bios should not be update to 704-2BTA

Here is a from this thread on Opterons(not sure if it applies to just single or Dual core or both)
http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26642

Memory: As with all other socket 939 CPUs, 939 pin Opterons do not work with registered/buffered memory. They require unregistered memory. Don?t confuse these chips with the 940 pin models. Excellent results have been achieved with both TCCD and BH-5. It is widely held that they are very sensitive to both read preamble and max asynchronous latency, so if you are having difficulty, try adjusting these settings. Users commonly use 9/7.5, 9/7, 8/6, and 8/5.5. It appears that Opterons, like Athlons, will not run 4x512 at 1T. Some have had problems using dividers (usually 180 and/or 166). If you are having problems passing SuperPi or Prime95 large FFT's, run your memory at 2T. Subsequent success indicates that your memory is the problem, not your CPU.

well I am going to loosen the ram to timings and retry the 5/6 divider
