Updat 1/24/06
Now $299

Update 1/20/06
couple hours from posting the price drops significantly.
I think monarch must be watching this post.
Price back down to 265
By the way dont get the stickers

Update 1/20/06
No longer hot.
Price just went up to $303

Update 1/17/06
Still available but there is another OEM option for 330 now so maybe it was a price mistake. If your going to get in I would get in now. I was looking and 275 is the price you would pay buying direct from AMD in lots of 1000 so its probably the best deal you will get if you need a motherboard.

Thanks OP. It's good timing too. I have been shopping for a deal on this combo and this will do it for me.
Wow! $271.63 for an Opteron is a great deal. Which mobo would you guys recommend with the Opteron?

Why is the retail version w/ bundle about $90 more than the OEM version? $90 for a crappy stock AMD heat sink/fan? Usually the bump from OEM to retail is like $10 or $15. Not $90. Makes me suspicious...

EDIT: Math mistake... Math is hard sometimes...

This is a piece of information related to this deal.

You get this deal only if you get a combo. They will open the boxes and assemble the system to make sure that it works.

If you want unopened boxes, you cannot get this deal. I contacted them and was told that if I wanted unopened boxes, I had to order the CPU and the motherboard separately and I would not get the special price.

The oem if you dont buy a combo is 320 or something like that. It was 270 originally but do to demad the price went up on it and the retail version. For some reason the oem with a combo stayed down (mistake?). If you are worried about it you can get a 3 year warranty on the motherboard and the cpu for around $30. I should have mine in the next day or two so ill let you know if i have any problems.

It was around $360 for the retail with combo when I checked this morning. I'm not that concerned. I just thought it was kind of weird, that's all.

Not trying to thread crap/go OT, but the last time I bought a motherboard/CPU bundle with Monarch, the board they bundled my chip with had an outdated BIOS that couldn't identify the chip. Plus they're always dog slow in finally shipping out to me.

But...the deal itself that you have posted is red hot. I'm just unlucky, as per witness to Monarch's resellerratings. An Opteron 165 at this price cannot be beat! If it's still in stock, I'd jump on this now if I were looking for a dual core entrance.

yeah monarch is definately my least prefered dealer too, they take too long to ship and they ship slow, and half the time i don't get tracking #'s.

i would get this if i did not already have a sli board.

I just got my opteron 165/DFI ultra-d combo and they already stuck the thermaltake venus 8 heatsink on the cpu..can't see the cpu date code. Anyone know if there's an easy way to remove the heatsink so I can see the code? I tried unclipping the heatsink, but it seems to be stuck on there fairly tight...

Hi, Am trying to build a server with internal RAID to act as a intranet / extranet server. I'm looking for a very reliable MB which one would you recommend? Thanks

Go to CPU/Processor forum, search for Opteron, you will see ton of discussions about mobo for the Opty cpu.

Download CPU-Z it will give you all the info without having to take off the HS/F. I am not sure about all, but give it a try.

I don't know if it is still true but in the past it has been said retail will give you longer warranty. Going by memory her which isn't very good. Retail is 1 Yr and OEM is 30 days. Also years ago around the forums retail used to overclock more reliably than its OEM brother. Like I said I don't know if that is still true today but those were some of the differences mentioned when the athlon first came along. I don't hang around the cpu forum much anymore.

If its stuck on, they probably used a thermal pad instead of grease (paste). Heatsinks often come with a thermal pad. These are usually a rubbery solid at room temp, but melt at elevated temps when the CPU warms up. The pad solidifies quickly when you shut down. So if you let it heat up to max just before you shut down to take it off, and do it fast, it might come up easier. Look for "prime95" on the Internet. Running that program will heat the CPU near to max. Use a twisting motion to break the seal.

When you put it back on, you will need to scrape and clean off the remains (with rubbing alcohol.) And you will need some thermal grease to replace the heat sink.

Check in the CPU forum. It is a common question.
