Yeah, if he was trying to scam you, he'll probably be searching long and hard for his name to appear...unless he's tried this more than once.
Any which way, best of luck, seriously sounds like a scam to me, and it's good to get it checked out.
Hope the bastard if he's a scammer gets shipped off to jail.

Definitely a collections agency, I can't believe you called the police. 😀

Anyway...

Time for a limited cease & desist so they quit calling you, everything from now on needs to be in writing.

Definitely check your credit reports to see if anything derogatory has hit yet. Also look for recent inquiries, if they bought your account they are likely watching your credit report.

If they have the wrong social security number they probably have the wrong person, it shouldn't be too hard to deal with. And on the bright side if they violate your request to not be contacted by phone it's money in your pocket ($500 a call, IIRC).

its amazing that people are so damn free with it.

One of the many pains of being an American service member!!! Rank, Last, First, Social. Everywhere.

brandonb, the agency you worked for may of been on the up and up, but there are plenty of them out there that are willing to break the law to try and collect. Like everything else those are the guys that give them all a bad name.

I don't owe anyone any money.

All my bills are on time.

What kind of creditor calls like that anyhow?</end quote></div>

Collection agencies mostly. They are EVIL to the core.

You better get a credit report and see what line of credit you forgot about because you owe someone. They dont go to these measures for nothing.</end quote></div>

But the last four SS number he gave me is WRONG!

And if you told him that, his response probably would have been "Could you give us your SSN so we can update our records?"

It's free to check your credit reports. I'm in the processing of refinancing my house, and the mortgage officer showed me a ding on my credit report that wasn't mine. I used www.annualcreditreport.com to see my report with Trans Union Credit, went through the dispute thing there, and it was removed the next day.

Mine is XXXXXXXXX

What are you going to do with it?

You are stupid. People working at random places will give you whatever you want if you know a valid SSN. I could find out who is giving you internet service or something stupid like that and probably screw with you. All I would need to know other than your SSN is your name and address...easy. You should edit that out you tard.

a collection agency would identify who they were. There would be no reason to hide the company name from you (if they did, how could they collect the debt from you???).

In regards to them saying it is of "grave federal importance" or some nonsense: An officer of the law would identify himself as such. And if it was some strange entity like the CIA or something, my guess is they would not need to verify your SS# and such.

My guess is its some scammer trying to get your money, I wouldn't sweat it.

I was a debt collector in the past and I'm a programmer at a collection agency now... Thats full of BS... They aren't shady and lie and bully to get a collection. And yes, they give commission to those who collect. So what? That doesn't mean they are gonna come hold your children hostage and whack people with sticks. Geez. They are hired to collect debt from people who don't normally want to pay back the money. Do you think its an easy job? Not at all. I'm sure everybody had friends who didn't pay them back and its usually hard to get paid back and thats your friends, imagine some people who don't know each other.

Sure, they deal with the scum of society, but plenty of them are scum themselves. I admit that my experience is strictly friend-of-a-friend sort of stuff, but they would refer to people they knew who did it, and described them as super-cheap, wouldn't lift a finger to help anyone else, extremely vindictive, and would totally take every advantage they could, way past what was reasonable. Another person described her friends' experience on the first day of the job: repossessing a little kids' bicycle. He quit on the spot.

Sure, it's work that needs done, no doubt. But that doesn't mean that many of them aren't Nazis about it.

Mine is 617xxxxxx

What are you going to do with it?

If I was feeling mean, I could do a reverse lookup on that number to get your full name, address, and phone number.

With that info, I can do a more in depth search and also get your birth date and possibly your mother's maiden name. With THAT, I can now open credit cards and bank accounts in your name... and basically screw up your credit report for years.

It's a good thing that most of us like you 🙂

then it's probably a case of same name different dude. Creditors are only allow to speak to the person they are looking for, so next time try telling them that's an incorrect SSN, see how that goes.

Then, how did he know my mom's name and number to begin with?

Lexus Nexus. You can find anything with that site.

Way to go. Some wealthy relative in a far away country had died and this friendly Nigerian just wanted to transfer your inheritance to you.
