I am a computer engineering student in need of a new computer. i'll be doing some cad work, some programming, 3d modeling, gaming (of course), along with your standard student stuff like papers and what not. do ya'll think i should wait for barton/clawhammer to jump on the nwe comp train? i only got so much money for now,a nd i wont hit the really computer intensive classes till this time next year but i though ti should start thinking about this now. i need the greatest price/performance ratio possible, any predictions or opinions? i realize that forecasting a year in advance in the tech sector you really need a crystal ball, but if you got 2 cents and some sense feel free to throw it in.

Whether you should upgrade now or wait, really depends on what you're running now. I'd say that if you've got at least a 1GHz CPU right now (especially if its an Athlon) and you're not doing heavy CAD/3D stuff yet, then you might be better off waiting until next year when you'll be needing all the PC horsepower you can get your hands on and will be able to buy a faster PC.

I agree. Even a 600Mhz~900Mhz will for the most part (maybe not games) do fine until next year. I'd save the cash, and buy later.
