Upcoming MMOs

Need an MMO to look forward to. Got some on my radar already: The Old Republic, The Secret World, Battlestar Galactica Online, Jumpgate Evolution. Those are the only ones I can reasonably tell that I would like...what are some others that are coming out in, say, the next 12 months(not in a big hurry) that I should be looking at?

I played Everquest for a long time, and that was pretty nice. PvP is a must unless the game is so otherwise godly that I wouldn't miss it. It need not be an RPG, as you can see from my inclusion of Jumpgate(and I'm not sure whether BSG Online is an RPG or not).

There are a lot of other MMOs I see but it's hard to tell how they compare to Everquest. Feel free to make comparisons if any of you have acquired a good feel for the upcoming MMOs.

Black Prophecy (afaik Jumpgate Evolution is canned/dead in the vacuum of space, closed beta still needs work)
Dark Millenium perhaps (WH40k MMO)

Jumpgate punched out? that sux! Guess I really need to pay attention to BSG online now...

Actually, whether we are talking about Black Prophecy or BSG, the one thing I would want to know about any space combat is whether it uses guaranteed damage modeling(ie, you shoot it with a missle and the missle has a fixed damage minus the effect of say, shields) or hit points and dice rolls, and of MASSIVE importance, is whether you directly fly your ship. I tried EVE and hated it because you only indirectly fly your ship, I don't like that at all :(

My friend is in the Rift beta and says it is a WoW clone, but much more vanilla feeling. He is liking it, but sadly it is a closed beta so I can't try it myself.

Fully supported from what I've been lead to believe. I played 7-8 years of UO, so MMO PvP is always terrible for me.

Doing rift beta, all servers have PVP in terms of faction based. Good guys versus not so good guys (but not bad guys since those are the monsters). There are plenty of open pvp servers as well which means anything goes.

Rift is a wow clone period though. The difference is you don't get base abilities for a class as you level at all. The base classes are rogue, cleric, warrior, and mage which you can't change once picked. But there is no universal rogue abilities. Everything is gained through the talent trees. Which really end up making it in the end the same as any other talent tree based game. It does have better graphics than wow. But I'm not terribly impressed with the game and won't be buying it at release I suspect it will lead to a slow death in about a year or two from now when it tries the F2P with micro transactions route like others before it have (DDO, LOTRO, Champions... etc).

As far as Star Wars: The Old Republic goes... who knows when this is going to come out. It keeps getting push back year after year. The last deadline for release was suppose to be this spring, which starts in about a month. No one sees that happening since it hasn't even gone through beta yet. But who knows if EA is going to force Bioware to push out some premature game that should have been aborted or given more time to bake.

None of the current MMO's on the horizon are exactly exciting me at all. Way to many WoW clones (pre Cata WoW that is) which all seem to fall short. I was really having high hopes for SWTOR myself, but I'm not holding my breath on that game.

Earthrise is supposed to launch soon (fake edit: launches Feb 4th). It's a sci-fi MMO full PVP. The NDA dropped a couple of days ago so I'm sure there's more info floating around out there.

Few posts about it over at Massively.

Indeed that doesn't sound too shabby:

- no class restrictions
- PVP
- deep crafting with blueprints and resources
- player crafted vehicles

Worth following for sure. Thanks for the heads up.

The Old Republic seems to have a PC Gamer article every other month, surely it's not as much vaporware as that? Has anyone seen anything on PvP in it? I've browsed a few articles, haven't seen much on that.

And what about that Planetside sequel? Planetside was always a game I wanted to try yet never did while addicted to EQ :(

The new planetside mmo looks like it could be fun.

I'm been playing a lot of Global Agenda, got it on sale and it's not bad either. Lots of new content added since reviews and good PVP in a sort of Tribes like experience.

Enjoying the Rift beta so far, but I haven't had a chance to try PvP yet. The Rift System and constant AI battles are pretty fun and engaging. Not sure I have the time or energy to devote to a P2P MMO though.

Guild Wars 2 might snag me though.

Spring = May, even June
And it hasn't been pushed back yet, since that's the one and only release period Bioware has mentioned.

Beta's not going to be long -- IMO not longer than a month, if even that. They have been doing focused testing for bugs and balance a long time now, and it's a story game so spoilers are an issue.

We'll get a more definite idea of the release window next month with EA's investor report.

This seems to be one of the things they're ironing out in current testing before announcing specifics. So far we know (1) that there will be PvP and PvE servers (for some level of open world PvP, I guess), (2) there will be team PvP "warzones", and (3) there will be PvPvE scenarios, seemingly in some raid instances.

w00t, pvp! By the way, one thing I am never ever able to get a feel for in previews of MMOs is how their combat works. But I presume it will be Everquest style get close for melee, with weak range damage and magical(Force) abilities that range may or may not matter for.

And I'm assuming that, unfortunately, the physics of the game won't be detailed such that you can pick up heavy stuff with the Force and throw it at people...?

Hard to say, but there's a more ranged stuff in TOR than you might think, including two full ranged tank subclasses. The main melee classes (Jedi Knight and Sith Warrior) get a nice closing ability though (force leap/charge).

There's a "throw big rocks" attack (for the Jedi Consular), but it's not based on actual environmental items.

Tribes Universe! Now that's interesting...but on the whole, man I could spend hours reading through reviews on all those just to pick 1 or 2 to actually try...

But at the moment I'd say TOR, Tribes Universe and the Secret World have got my attention. Only thing I wonder about Secret World though, is that Dreamfall and Longest Journey, which that is somewhat based or related to, were primarily noncombat adventure games. Wonder what they are doing for combat mechanics.
