I wouldn't call i5 or i7 old and obsolete by today's standards. Sandy Bridge is going to be Intel getting lazy until Haswell.

How about X58?

After the muscled out ATi, Nvidia, and VIA for chipset competition by threatening litigation they have sat completely on their hands.

Without a doubt they have directly limited consumer choice and enforced a monopoly on chipsets.

Lets not forget the whole Atom / Ion fiasco either. They are monopolizing that platform as well.

very true... to say that the chipset business got better when intel muscled out the competition is absurd.
And X58 is a bad joke... the north bridge has 3 connections... 1 to CPU, 1 to south bridge, 1 to video cards.
Go captain ambitious!

The highest multi ive seen on a C2D platform was probably on wolfdale at 10.5

Not including the EE cpu's.

I know they arnt exactly new tech anymore. But I for one would like to see price cuts on the Yorkfield Quads. Q9550 / Q9650

Especially since you can get a i7 for less $.

That's the same CPU I have. 🙂

It should work as long as it's the same FSB and socket. I'm trying to find a CPU with more then 2mb of cache and the only place that I can find the E6700 is on Ebay. :\

not STILL, intel makes better chips today. indeed back in the day (circa 2003 with the 64bit AMD chips) AMD made far superior chips. At the time I said "only a moron or a person ignorant of the existance of AMD and their products would buy an intel".

We have seen an agressive intel improve the quality of their products since. Although in the past 2 years they have laxed again, pushing outdated and obsolete hardware because they can.

The only reason AMD catched Intel was because they bought NexGen and Intel fumbled with NetBurst but that was a short reprieve.

I ended up having to spend $140 on a used Q9450 because Intel is way overcharging for their Q9550. Compared to intel's i5/i7 stuff and even AMD's Thubans and such the price for the s775 quads are aweful. You can be sure that Intel will stop production on those 4 core s775's before they give you a good deal on one.

They want you to upgrade your entire platform instead of just the cpu. You can be sure they keep things that way on purpose. Just like many companies these days they are Not content with some of your money, they want it all and as quick as possible.

That article is highly revisionist; furthermore, it is inaccurate, but this thread isn't supposed to be about the history of AMD's competition with Intel. Not sure why you or anyone else is trying to rewrite history to make AMD look bad.

I've owned a 386dx40 and a k6-233 (and I had a k6 2 350 as a loaner for awhile). Phenom certainly didn't "feel like" any of those processors, at least not from my point-of-view.

i was confused with the E6850

There is no E6800, it was called the X6800 with an unlocked multi.
(i had one... and then gave it to gillbot.... )

The only cpu to have a 11x multi is the E8700
However these guys never made it to retail as far as i know:

From the FX series on AMD -> X6800 -> QX6700 -> QX9650 -> i7 965 -> i7 975 -> i7 980X

Im fairly confident when it comes to EE cpu's from intel... dont you agree? 😛

Unless you meant Core 2 Duo E6700? In that case, get a used Q6600/6700 instead. They will overclock to 3.4ghz and hold you off until a full system upgrade. There is no point in upgrading from E6300 to E6700 (even if overclocked).

Again, the K-6 was the brain child of NexGen (which AMD bought) and the first time AMD was able to barely catch up, even Wikipedia knows this:

Before that AMd was as AMD is today...lagging behind in performance.

And even then the K-6 was know for it's very weak FPU performance compared to Intel.

As far as I remember AMD's K6 233 lead from March to June 1997...where the P-II came out.

But again, if that where your first CPU, I can understand why you have a screwed up perception of AMD's history.
