Upcoming Intel Price-Cuts

Interesting, making an i5 760 with clocks the same as the 860. I wonder if they're gonna replace it or bring in a new one at the top and move the rest down, or rely on the 875k to fill the gap

Even though I made the decision not to buy an Intel processor based on the complaint filed by AMD, I think I have gotten over my initial anger and may actually buy an i7-950 when the price drops. Although I may not have the patience, and just purchase a Thuban in the short term.

Intel is still making better chips.

not STILL, intel makes better chips today. indeed back in the day (circa 2003 with the 64bit AMD chips) AMD made far superior chips. At the time I said "only a moron or a person ignorant of the existance of AMD and their products would buy an intel".

We have seen an agressive intel improve the quality of their products since. Although in the past 2 years they have laxed again, pushing outdated and obsolete hardware because they can.

I wouldn't call i5 or i7 old and obsolete by today's standards. Sandy Bridge is going to be Intel getting lazy until Haswell.

Intel is not pushing i5s and i7s... they have priced them such that only the elite can purchase them... they have REMOVED capabilities such as Intel VT-x from their newer "lower end", they are pushing 32bit in order POS atoms (instead of CULV nehalems), they are pushing crippled i3s (which lose out on most of the interesting new features of nehalem), they are still producing lots of C2 chips and sell them at nearly the same price as the nehalem chips (and are fabbed on the same size)...
They are integrating graphics and lower costs but not focusing on increasing performance.

Intel is complacent again.

Cleaning house? This hardly constitutes a price cut if you ask me (minus the i7-950).

Not interesting until they cut prices on the flagship models i5-750, i7-860, i7-920. 133 Mhz bump for $10 more doesn't really excite...

Old: yes (relative to the industry). Obsolete: certainly not.

the pentium 6800 will actually be a pretty good upgrade for anyone wanting to milk the 775 teat. and the 950 will be the new mc $199 chip

this is bad news for amd. i wonder what theyll do--hex core athlons for $99?

I really don't see this being a big deal for AMD. They're already in trouble with this gen, the war they're gearing up for is Bulldozer vs Sandy Bridge. If you're not looking for backwards compatibility, and not looking forward, there is no place for AMD at the high end already. Below $150, they are still very competitive (before and after these "price cuts"); above $150 they're relying on two things: same socket upgrades, and reasonable assurance that AM3 (880/890) will carry over to next gen. And fanboys...

nothing exciting except maybe the new i5 760 will take place of i5 750 perhaps get a better OC on that chip. rest of the stuff isn't too great.

I know they arnt exactly new tech anymore. But I for one would like to see price cuts on the Yorkfield Quads. Q9550 / Q9650

Especially since you can get a i7 for less $.

They do this because they can. Because despite how crippled they make their own processors, they will still get bought. Either AMD has to get off their butts and seriously upping the quality of their silicon or they need to get their marketing team into overdrive.

correct... this does, however, give AMD a window of opportunity to give intel a black eye with annother innovate chip, like the x86_64 architecture or the IMC was... Now that hector ruin has left and an engineer is in charge AMD might actually do that.

hrm I didn't even know the i3 550 existed before this thread! I was only aware of the 530 and the 540 😵

I don't know what Intel will do with the i7 860 and 870 though. It seems logical to either remove the i7 860 and bring the i7 870 down in price or just remove the i7 870 all together. A pretty steep drop in the price of the i7 950 as well 😵
