I will be building a computer in about 2 weeks, and I have some general questions about how AM2 is coming along.
Original thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=27&threadid=1857459&enterthread=y
DISCLAIMER: I AM BUILDING THE SYSTEM ON SOCKET AM2 IN 3 WEEKS, NO CONROE (unless something gets in the way)

So, here's the questions:
- How good will all the first-generation parts be? Is it advisable being an early adopter?
Looking at the posts on this board, it seems that some answers could be forthcoming very quickly.
- Will all the parts be available for purchase and delivery a week following the launch? I would like to order the system from Newegg.com in 3 weeks (at or around the first week of June). Critical parts are basically the CPU and a motherboard to run it (I have a thread about which mobo in the Motherboards forum).
- Will Socket AM2 memory controllers finally be able to run four 1GB double-sided DIMMs at 1T command rate (new memory controller and all)?

As far as memory goes, how does this memory look?

AM2 is not much better performance wise then the socket 939 about 5%max. It does allow DDR2 because all AM2 chips have an updated memory controller. If you want to go AMD I would wait till next year for AM3 which will replace AM2 and quad core goodness. BTW Conroe should be coming out the same exact time AM2. Samples have already have been leaked.

Conroe want be here the exact same time. Last I heard it was still a couple months or so down the road. Think I read it in the buyers guide on the main page and a interview from somewhere. Don't remember now??

AM2 will be launched on May 23, and conroe is still 2 months away...

performance wise AM2 will be around 5% faster real-time than 939 and maybe 10% synthetic.

you could get AM2 when it is launched if you cant wait but i suggest waiting to see for conroe..

OCZ Gold Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 667 (PC2 5400)

I know it runs slower, but it's a lot cheaper....

Not a very good choice, IMO. Early previews of AM2 show that PC2-6400/DDR800 is needed pull AM2 ahead of s939.

Prices on DDR1 will continue to rise though, as more and more companies retool to make DDR2.
