Up (the movie): 3D vs 2D

Gonna take the wife to see Up this weekend. It's showing on a normal screen, but it's also available in the same theater in 3D. Anybody seen a movie in 3D? I'm wondering if it's worth seeing in that format, or if I'm just going to get nauseous and throw up halfway through.

I would avoid it in 3D. We went and saw that Journey to the Center of the Earth movie in 3d, and it was fairly disappointing. Maybe 3 - 5 scenes in the whole movie where you actually noticed anything 3D about it.

Which, when I thought about it, makes sense. They're making a tremendous amount of money on DVD/Blu Ray sales, which means they're not going to make the movie heavily 3D-reliant (like the shitfest Jaws 3D), because nobody would buy the DVDs then. I would avoid any movie that isn't specifically released as a 3D exclusive.

3D movies give me headaches (partially because I see much better out of one eye, so it screws my brain up trying to process it).

I don't really understand the reason to make so many of the movies in 3d these days.

People at home won't be able to use that technology and many theaters can't do it also and yet it seems of late many of these movies are trying to use it.

And not to mention there are times when watching it without it has a few issues such as when you know they wanted people to see it in 3d and messes with the film to much.

I watched it in 3D. It was the first time I'd ever watched anything in 3D as well. I'd say go for it since you've never tried it. The effect isn't ridiculously good, but it's worth it to experience at least once. I didn't get queasy at all but I have a strong stomach. I did have to constantly prop up the glasses with my fingers though because I wore them over my existing glasses and my nose doesn't stick out far enough to hold the second layer of glasses on.

And hey, if you're going to try 3D you might as well try it with Up, which is an excellent movie. Plus the glasses preserve your manliness by helping hide the tears that you'll shed during the movie.

As for future 3D movies, I think I'll probably pass. The effect isn't enough to warrant repeated premiums on ticket prices, which are high enough as it is. I'd much rather pay extra to see it in 60fps (if it were available) where the fluidity makes everything seem super REAL.

The colors may be slightly washed out when wearing glasses and it may give you a headache. From what little I've read, it enhances the movie but is not required. I am fairly certain that there is a LOT of 3d in the movie, unlike Journey to the Center of the Earth apparently...

The Real3D technology actually works surprisingly well these days. I'm one of those people who rarely see 3D but I can with the Real3D movies. Some movies are better than others in 3D Coraline was crap, Monsters vs. Aliens was awesome. If you've never done it before, I would say go for it! see if you like it or not.

I have the same problem with the glasses. I'm wondering if it's anything like Toy Story Midway Mania (the ride at California Adventure). If so, I'm going to see it in 2D. I can handle a 5-minute amusement park ride in 3D. A feature-length film? I'll pass.

It's not the type of 3D that is inches in front of your face, at least not the ones with Real3D technology. It simply makes the things on screen (key words: on the screen) appear to have depth. I noticed only one part of the movie where you felt like something got "thrown" at you, but it was so quick that it hardly mattered. It was obvious that it wasn't one of those things purposely put in to "scare the 3D crowd and take 'em for a ride."

U23D is still perhaps the most amazing eye-candy I've witnessed, saw it at IMAX-3D here in Dallas.

They'll probably make me pay an extra $5 more 3D, so screw that. Going Monday, and going 2D, if I get to choose.

Watched Monsters vs Aliens in 3D and other than a few scenes didn't really notice the 3D. It also seemed those scenes were thrown in there for the sake of making it a 3D movie. It didn't really add anything. Though I think in all the scenes had the background and foreground in 3D but you ignore that while watching. The added fee is not worth it.

My mother-in-law always takes my boys to the latest Real3D cartoon. They all seem to enjoy them. Actually if I think about it, if my boys get out/way for a few hours, everyone is happy, including me and my wife.

Several reviewers pointed out that the 3D process results in a loss of color and an overall duller picture, and they greatly preferred just watching it in 2D. I'm thinking I'll probably follow that advice.

I was just about to reply about that. Saw several animated features in 3D&2D: colors seemed washed out in the 3D compared to the 2D version. Too much gimmicky crap being introduced in theaters like the new "IMAX" screens.

Well they're trying to find ways to differentiate the theater experience from just watching a movie on your big HDTV at home. I can't fault that, BUT... If you're going to do something, do it right. IMAX is great, "IMAX" isn't.. 3D CAN be cool, but not just for the sake of being in 3D.

Do you live in a two- or a three-dimensional world?

I think you've already answered your question.

BTW, I saw it in 3D and it was incredible. :)

We went and saw Monsters Vs Aliens in 3-D and it was pretty neat.

I can tell you that at Disney's wild aminal park they a 3-d movie and it was the gas. Things actual looked like they flew off the screen and were next to you.

BTW 3-d usually makes me puke my guts out but M vs A did not do that.

We would have gone to the 3D today but their projection system was broken. So we settled for the 2D version, and the ticket seller said, "Hey, you saved $9, so it's not all bad." I had NO idea it would have been $4.50 more a ticket for the 3D!
