Unusual foods you eat and recommend to others

Short version: Name strange (ethnic) foods that you eat that you would recommend to others.

Every ethnicity often has unusual flavors and foods that don't quite make it to the common table of consumption. I'm not interested in random junk for a stunt and tastes terrible. I'm interested in what you eat that is considered bizarre, especially if it considered part of your cultural heritage. Something that people would shy away from eating but you would recommend as very delicious and worth trying. Please describe it, tastes, recipes, and even pictures.

I eat out a lot and I'd consider myself a bit of a foodie. I've been ordering Frog legs a lot lately from every different preparation. I had a french preparation which was sauteed in a butter garlic white wine sauce. Very tender, very good. Chinese and indonesian preparations were boiled in a broth, and steamed with ginger and scallion. I also had them fried which was awesome. Like super tender and sweet chicken wings. Frog legs to me have a similar taste to chicken wings but a sweeter taste and softer texture. It's like a mix of chicken and mild white meat fish.

I also had a very expensive Chinese Hairy crab the other day. Not that crab was weird, but what parts were eaten was a bit strange to me. Specifically this poached egg white looking substance that came out of it when it was steamed. It was like this gelatinous egg white type foam. It had a strong mineraly taste, bit fishy and briny. Pretty good actually but a bit too intense for me. I also had the roe, which there was a ton of. Very intense rich flavor. I couldn't eat it all it was so rich. It doesn't really taste like crab. Hard to describe it.

This is not a gross out contest although that person showing the Balut was interesting. I'm curious about strange ethnic foods that you would recommend to others. Something we may be inspired to pick up and try.

toasted Cheez Whiz & dill weed sandwich

taste: solid cheesy taste with a nice dill accent
recipe: toast 2 slices of bread, spread Cheez Whiz generously, sprinkle dill weed, eat

I like frog legs, but I can't find them in central PA.

One more offbeat thing that I recommend to my friends is pickled okra.

squirrel and frog are both good. I want to try rabbit
Rabbit is awesome. If I had to compare it, it's like a mix of white meat chicken and duck. I've had it prepared many ways, mostly braised though. Always very soft and falling off the bone. Much more flavor then chicken, not as strong as duck. My favorite would probably be this portuguese restaurant that stews it with pearl onions, carrots, and potatoes in a earthenware pot.

I never had squirrel.

I don't know that it's particularly weird, but I grew up eating pastina (think the stars from Campbell's Chicken & Stars soup) in milk. If I had to pick one item as a comfort food, that'd probably be it. Warm milk + tiny pasta = <3

The only problem is that for the life of me, I can't find actual pastina anywhere, so I'm stuck using the little alphabet letters, or orzo if those aren't around.

Runza: A mixture of cabbage and beef baked in bread. Some of my relatives started a chain of restaurants based on this family recipe, but they have changed the recipe a lot to ?Americanize? it. You can sometimes find the original runzas made in russian communities in Texas and Nebraska, when you do it is almost always someone related to me.

Gleece: Egg dumplings and potatoes. Sometimes served as a soup (cook the potatoes in water until they are soft and have given up a lot of starch then add evaporated milk and drop in egg dumplings and simmer), sometimes the liquid is drained and the remainder is fried until crunchy. Yum!

Fried Chicken Gizzards. They are probably going to give me a heart attack, but who cares.

Then I can get into the southern cookin' like butter beans.

Fresh cheese curd. It seems to be a northeastern US thing, and any I've had outside of home is just hunks of cheese that weren't pressed into blocks, and that's not what authentic cheese curd is. It's briny and soft like fresh mozzarella, but with a different flavor. When it's really fresh, it squeaks on your teeth.

Oh yea I got reminded that I have Ostrich steaks in my freezer. It's like a super lean beef with a tiny bit of a venison and turkey taste. Very very good if prepared right. It's very healthy for you.

sea urchin roe.

When good, quite possibly one of the best food items on earth.

When bad, completely atrocious.

Of course I can't get it here, but when I was in China I often introduced people to barbecued lamb stomach. It was really good! A little tough, but tasty. They cut it into thin strips so the toughness isn't so bad, and the sauce they put on it is quite good too.
