Unusual Crash to Desktop

Ever since I installed windows 7, 64 bit several months ago, I have had this problem: It happens usually when I open Google chrome, and start to enter something in the search bar, I get a crash to desktop. The cursor arrow parks at the bottom right. As soon as I move the cursor the window opens back up and I can go ahead and enter the data or what ever I was about to do. The same thing happens (however not every time) when I open Thunderbird or most any other window. Some times when it crashes it will leave a thin black outline of the edges where the widow was on the screen before it crashed. I can put up with this, however I would rather not. Can someone tell me how to fix this?
