Unstable System... Help Please!

I received my AMD TBird 950 along with Asus A7V and Chrome Orb heatsink two days ago. After assembling, the system hangs after about 3 minutes of continues operation. I tested every part on different computer and they all worked fine. As a final solution, I put the whole system under a cool stream of air coming from the room's air-conditioner! The system worked fine with no hangs.

I cannot leave the system under the AC, so I need a powerful cooling system. I am going to upgrade the PS to 330W or more and add case fans. What do you think of SenFu Water Cooling System? Is Chrome Orb good enough?

I have almost the same config, but I have a 900MHz TBird at a GHz.
I "had" a Golden Orb, but it went in a drawer. The HSF just didn't cut it. I was able to get a hold of a GlobalWin F0P32-1 thats works pretty well. I wanted a Alpha 6035, but I can't find any in stock!!
 
yea the orb isnt that good on a TBird, get the alpha if you can find it,

if you dont wana make your own water cooling kit then i would recommend overclocker's hideout water cooling/peltier system
 
I have a 1GHz TBird...I had a few hangs as you describe. My TBird had an Alpha with 38CFM delta (Darn loud) fan so the CPU temp didn't seem to be the problem.

My solution: I first reflashed the BIOS back to 1.002 as I had heard that 1.003 and 1.004a caused problems. I lowered my Vcore voltage via BIOS to 1.65 (ASUS probe reads 1.695). I then placed a 92mm fan in the top of the case as a blowhole and one in the side of the case blowing in toward the base of the CPU and chipset (SDram, etc). I also hooked the power supply fan directly to a 12 volt hookup to avoid the up and down speed of the thermally controlled fan. On a negative side, I couldn't stand the noise of the Delta 38CFM fan, so I removed it and replaced with a Sunon 24CFM fan on the Alpha heatsink (CPU temp went up by 6C at full load, but much quiter🙂). My system now runs at full load with a CPU temp of 47 to 50C (depending on room temp) and a mb temp of 33 to 35C (again, based on room temp).

Reading the newgroups, I discovered that I may have fixed the very problem you describe by cooling the clock generator on the A7V. The clock generator sits just below the dip switches and runs very hot. Several solutions to lockups were to place a small blower fan and/or heatsink blowing toward this chip. My inlet blowhole does that.

I am in my way to order some HS, PS, and fans. Which is better Alpha Pal6035 or Alpha PEP66 or GlobalWin FOP38-1 for TBird 950 on A7V? Also, how is Powmax 400W power supply?

Do you have thermal goop on the orb in contact with the T-bird? My uncle just bought a computer from a mom and pop store and it has a rinky dink heatsink fan on there and it doesnt go unstable even though it runs damn hot.

Just make sure the heatsink gets to transfer all that heat, those things should cool just fine unless you're overclocking.
