Unsolicited offer of $3,000 for my domain.

I've had a domain for a couple years that I've had every intention of developing. The name is obviously marketable as an alternative to a popular online service.

I received an offer from a domain broker for $3000. I don't think I want to sell it for that but I'm curious. Someone obviously paid $70 for the broker time to remain anonymous and the price isn't trivial, are they just trying to lowball the value? Should I just counteroffer something absurd and see what the response it?

I'm more curious to know who wants it.

Sorry, I'm not up for broadcasting that aspect of my dilemma. It's 8 letters long, dictionary based and clearly states how it's better than a certain top 30 website though.

Well my thought is to turn the broker against her client, since she's asking for a 10% commission. Maybe she'll divulge who wants it?

Oh, if that's the case then counter by adding two zeroes to that offer. 😀

Here's the brokers email:

Dear Sox,

Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. Would you mind providing me a figure that you would be willing to sell the domain for? That way, I can tell my client whether he should look for an alternate name or not. I would really appreciate it.

Best,

Holly

and here's my unsent rebuttal:

Hey baby, (ok, I didn't say baby)

That's not something I could give you. Since it's in your interest to drive the price up I'd use whatever information is at your disposal to do so. If someone is targeting "********.com" then they're obviously making an attempt to challenge *********.com. If they're corporate and not just a private buyer you can guarantee they wouldn't balk at a 5 digit number. I'm not squatting on the domain for resale, it's something to be developed.

I have no magic number but $3000 is assuredly not close to it if I had one.

Thanks.

Sox

Oh and to add: I renew my domains all at the same time every year. I renewed a week ago and the offer came 1 day after, so it's obvious they've been watching and hoping to pick it up.

Without knowing the domain name, I'm afraid we can't give you a good strategy. If you're curious, there are a few online domain name appraisal services-- but most of what's provided is pure speculation.

It the domain name a single dictionary word?

Two dictionary words indicating a superiority over a large, mainstream existing site.

I posted my hypothetical rebuttal a few posts back, I just wonder if it's too adversarial.

What site is the domain broker from? I would be wary of someone trying to scam you out of your domain. Again if you posted the domain we could give you some kind idea on the price.

It's afternic/buydomains. Sorry, I don't want this discussion being spidered with the domain name.

how much do you think, in your mind, that you will let go of your domain? Does $3,000 adequate?

It seems to me that you are actually willing to sell it at this price, but just wondering how much it's actually worth.
It would be hard, since you don't know who's the buyer, it could be a big corp (which make it higher) or a small one (which make it lower).

I'd say keep it at this price, and set yourself how much you'd like to make out of it. If it's, say $10,000 or $25,000, so be it. You are the one who know the domain name, if it deemed a good name (and not too specific) then keep it.
