Too bad I don't live in NYC. Gees I charge $150 for a network setup with 2 computers + $25 for each extra device. + it's not that hard to turn on WEP(which is worthless can be hacked in 5 minutes even at 128 bit)

Representatives from the county's information technology department drove around downtown White Plains, N.Y., with laptop computers and detected 248 open wireless connections in less than half an hour, the county reported.

No...Every pimple-faced geek teen in America "War Drives" ... and many others as well.

But don't worry, Dave. I think your tin-foil hat would prevent the WiFi signals from escaping in the first place :p

Of course I wouldn't expect you to know the difference between a pimple faced Geek and a Government Official.

The politicians are idiots.

A firewall, gateway server, or whatever they call will do nothing to prevent outgoing attacks

They are for blocking INCOMING ATTACKS

What a bunch of GOONS!!

WPA is encrypted however not all wifi adapters support WPA. If you have older 802.11B gear you won't be able to connect to a WPA secured network.

Maybe a stupid question but can't aluminum foil deflect radio/whatever signals

my friend was saying how if you wrapped something from a store that had those electronic sensors the alarms wouldn't go off when you walked out. (I would never do that;))

Why are unsecured wireless points suddenly a government issue? If a company can't take a couple of minutes to turn on WEP/WPA or simply turn off wireless, then they deserve what comes to them. You can already prosecute someone for getting into your network and causing damage, so whats the point of adding another law onto this.

I think that if you don't encrypt a wireless point or do anything to prevent casual access to it, then its a public point. Since your wireless signal is being broadcast to the general public, then its free to use.

GoPackGo, a firewall can also prevent outgoing access, it simply depends on how you configure them.

"Why are unsecured wireless points suddenly a government issue?"

Because they want to stop truly anonymous web communications.
