Unfortunately I think this genre of games is dead. There will be no new UT or Quake style games.

It would be a niche market compared to making some consolized junk. And getting an AAA studio to do it wouldn't make financial sense.

Yeah theres too much competition from MMO's (which werent popular back when Unreal first got online play) and a wider variety of Steam shooters like CS and TF2 and L4D. And those games are either free or dirt cheap.
Who's gonna pay 5-10 dollars for an old game that not many people play any more?

Plus the graphics are better on the Source games and while that doesnt affect game play, it does lure more people in.

WOW! This is a fantastic coincidence.
For the first time in months, I was just playing UT2004 for shits and giggles. Not many people on it now. And most of the current players are just into oddball maps & games. The most popular seems to be DM and Team DM on MASSIVE maps only using sniper rifles of various sorts.

In fact if you scroll down a game list its usually like 200 unpopulated servers and maybe 3 or 4 with a couple players and maybe, if you're lucky, 1 single map with a bunch of people actually playing.

I miss the old days.
As do I my young Jedi!!

The biggest thing is the creativity of the users that made the custom maps. The giant maps were awesome. Finding all those mouse holes and hidden areas. Hours and hours of good semi-clean fun!

For me it would be UT2K4 and Quake Wars, but I also like mission based MP.

Meh, 2k4 was a vehiclefest, and sucked during on foot combat because of it.

That depends on the game mode but yeah, as a rule I avoided vehicle maps.
The worst were those massive open levels (home brew) where you cant do anything unless you have a vehicle.
