Like the title says do you think Unreal Tournament- Original (UT99), is the best and most long lived online game?

Consider all the user made and /or custom maps. (literally hundreds of custom maps) Plus what it did for taking online gaming to a new level.

I personally love the giant maps of which most are custom made.

Yeah kind of cartoonish now days but IMAGINE if all those custom maps and characters were made using todays technology and games engine (s).

There are servers still up and running this game.:awe:

If not, what game is?

I think as far as competitive FPS goes there are 3 big standouts

-Unreal Tournament
-Quake 3
-CS

I have never really gotten into the competitive scene, but I enjoyed UT99, and UT2K4 quite a bit.

There was still a professional Korean StarCraft Broodwar league until less than two months ago. Not bad for a game from 1998. There's still amateur leagues in China and Korea as well as decent competition on iccup in the west. It defined e-sports, and still gets some play from thousands every day. It wins, imo.

I hope UT 4 or whatever they call the next one is actually good and competitive and not just an engine demo. God I hope its a good competitive arena fps, we need a new one.

Holy cow isnt that the truth. I wish they would take a lot of the custom maps that users have made, give the user the credit with a signed release so they do not have to pay them, and convert the map to the latest technology, using the latest game engine.

I am going to have to go home and reinstall UT99 and load up all the custom maps I saved using cachecleaner.

You and me both, it's been nearly a decade since we've had a good UT.

UT 2k4 was the pinnacle of first person shooters. UT3 shit all over the UT franchise.

Bleh, I loved UT when it first came out, and played it like mad, but I'm seriously tired of the whole 'deathmatch' gametype.

I hope they do an Unreal 2 type multiplayer, with deployables like the force field sticks you could setup, and some kind of team objectives ala Enemy Territory. Straight up deathmatch is easy pass for me these days.

UT99 is still my favorite FPS of all time.

There's still a group of old UT community friends that get together every (Frag) Friday and (Smackdown) Saturday night to play UT99 Capture-the-Flag at this server:

The Realm server
8.9.36.186:7777

They also have a Teamspeak 3 server.

Sorry, quake1 / TF is still alive and ticking. I'd say Unreal is 2nd.

I played a lot of CS and quite a bit of UT too. Both were great.

My brother's roommate was one of the top UT players in the world for a while. A couple of kids found out they went to the same school as him and asked if they could come over to his place and just watch him play for a few hours.

The new Rise of the Triad should fill that role nicely :)

Unfortunately I think this genre of games is dead. There will be no new UT or Quake style games.

It would be a niche market compared to making some consolized junk. And getting an AAA studio to do it wouldn't make financial sense.

WOW! This is a fantastic coincidence.
For the first time in months, I was just playing UT2004 for shits and giggles. Not many people on it now. And most of the current players are just into oddball maps & games. The most popular seems to be DM and Team DM on MASSIVE maps only using sniper rifles of various sorts.

In fact if you scroll down a game list its usually like 200 unpopulated servers and maybe 3 or 4 with a couple players and maybe, if you're lucky, 1 single map with a bunch of people actually playing.

I miss the old days.
