Confirmed: No Unreal Tournament 2007 till 2007

Midway says the PC edition of its much-awaited shooter won't ship until "first half" of next year; PS3 version still TBA, more Xbox 360 hints dropped.

In October 2003, Atari announced that Unreal Tournament 2004 had been delayed...until 2004. Though it was originally slated for a February release, the latest installment in Epic Games' wildly popular PC shooter didn't make it to market until mid-March.

Now it appears that this year, Unreal fans will be feeling a sense of déjà vu vis-à-vis the latest installment in the series. Today, representatives for Midway Games, which took over Unreal publishing duties from Atari in July 2004, announced that Unreal Tournament 2007 will not be released in time for the 2006 holiday season.

"Right now, UT 2007 (PC) is slated to hit in the first half of 2007," the spokesperson told GameSpot. When it was announced in May 2005, the game had a broad "2006" release date. Since then, it has moved to a broader "winter" release window, which traditionally extends into the first few months of the following year. The new release window means the game could conceivably not ship until June 2007.

While frustrating for those hoping for an egg-nog-fueled yuletide fragfest, the delay will hopefully allow Epic to fine-tune UT 2007's gameplay much like it did with its predecessor. When UT 2004 finally did ship, it was one of the most critically acclaimed PC titles of the year. Since then, it has become one of the most popular PC shooters on the market and has been a prime draw at many gaming tournaments.

As for the PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 2007, its ship date remains undetermined. Interestingly, though, Midway's response did not mention the PlayStation 3 version by name. "The next gen version(s) [of UT2007] have yet to be tagged with an exact ship date yet." Earlier this year, PSM magazine had claimed that UT 2007 would be a launch title for the PS3, which goes on sale in the US on November 17.

When asked if the mention of multiple next-gen editions meant UT 2007 might be coming to the Xbox 360, the rep demurred, saying, "Nothing is yet confirmed ... [but] I would say that your assumption is relatively plausible." At the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2006, Midway CEO David Zucker said the game was being released for "for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3," but the company has subsequently refused to confirm the game is coming to Microsoft's platform.

Speaking of the 360, UT 2007's delay means the sole release from Epic this year will be for the next-gen console. Gears of War, Epic's third-person sci-fi/horror shooter, is scheduled for a holiday 2006 release--for now, anyway. A "big announcement" regarding the game is expected later this week.

No problem here, either. If it's as polished as UT2004 was, then it's absolutely worth it.

I'm so sick of pre-beta SH!T (Battlefield 2 - prime example) being released to consumers at premium prices. SCREW that. You wouldn't settle for a TV that only received the odd channels, so why the hell has it become acceptable for games to only do half of what they're supposed to do?

Epic is one of the last game devs that I'd buy from. I'm on the fence with UbiSoft.

Everyone else can shine my fscking knob.

Glad to hear it. From everything I've been following, I didn't think it would be ready for a 2006 release so I'm very happy they're polishing it instead of pushing it out the door like most other developers would do. Finally getting decent gameplay after the 4th or 5th patch is not my idea of a good gaming. Yay, for Epic!

So true, if this were any other developer it would come out for the 06 holiday season and I'd still wait 3-6 months to buy it knowing that's when the first patch will come out to make it actually playable. Epic just forces you to wait for "the first patch" but instead has it in the original game. IMHO much better than frustrating users with a broken game for 3 months. I don't want to be a beta tester, I'm paying them not the other way around. The other developers just want free beta testing. We should boycott them all, or file a class action lawsuit like they did for advertising screens as larger than the viewable image size or printer cartridges that say they're empty when they're not.

As long as its not crap, I'm in! I don't care how long they take, as long as its polished.

FWIW, Amazon has an available date of 3/30/07. Add a couple of months to that . . . so maybe summer of '07?

I wonder if my ol' Athlon Barton and BFG6800 will be up to the task :(

I was wondering how anyone could put such a blindingly obvious statement in the thread title, until I saw the dates of the posts. :p

I would also like to see a well polished game on release, even if it takes longer. I hope they make it more like UT than UT2004 though. If the gameplay in this similar to the old UT style, it will probably become my main online game for the next few years.

I might be able to run it okay, although I don't care much about graphics in multiplayer games and will probably turn down everything to maximize the framerate.

Barton was a great OCing chip and the 6800 on a 1280x1024 monitor can probably still run almost anything at high settings and I never saw a heck of a difference between high and medium settings so stepping down for newer games probably won't hurt. Wait and see is my suggestion. If I recall from an interview on the topic, they said 9500 pro was the baseline they were aiming for and you're above that.

But, ya, there's enough other good games coming out between now and then I'm all for waiting for a polished stable product.

I've been waiting for this game for a while, and I'm really anxious. If it takes a few extra months to put it out, that's fine--the world needs a decent FPS. What was the last good high speed shooter?... UT2K4?

QFT.

This statement really struck me. I had forgotten just how polished 2004 was until you brought it up. Blizzard does this well too.

Quake 4 deathmatch is even higher speed :) I otherwise agree with you though. Don't rush and screw up the quality.

I would say UT. UT2004 was very polished and had a lot of content but I didn't like how they toned down all the weapons in it and made various other gameplay changes that slowed things down.

I became a huge fan of UT2k4 in Winter 2005 and absolutely loved the Onslaught mode. I'm really looking forward to the release of UT2k7. All other multiplayer FPS right now seem too slow for me and I've reverted to playing Quake 3 Arena for some fast-paced action.

Well as long as it doesn't turn into another Duke Nuke Em Forever... :p Other than that, completely agreed.

Epic and Blizzard always seem to put out top notch games.
Ubisoft is somewhere in between good and ok. :)
EA earned their last dollar off me with BF2. :|

I'm glad they're taking the time to get it right the first time :)

Epic is one of the few companies who still waits to put out a quality product.

I'll wait too.
