Unreal Tournament 2003 : Why does it look and play like a console game?

I downloaded the demo a few days ago, and have been playing it. I am unimpressed with how it looks, plays, and responds. The 3D perspective looks weird compared to the original UT. The whole game reminds me of playing a console game. I don't care for consoles or the games. I must say the graphics are good, but the 3D perspective which the character looks into the world is weird. I don't know if you can change this or not. Also, characters and objects don't stand out, where you can see them easily. Everything is so blended together, dark and dreary looking, that it's difficult to see other characters and objects in the world. Was it developed by someone else besides Epic and the original UT developers?

when you say its like a console do you mean the gameplay is super fast? I just played a deathmatch game, and I couldn't believe my eyes. my eyes could not keep up with the action let alone my hands.

He might be trolling, but his gamma may be alright... I've noticed that it's quite a bit more difficult to pick out players from the surroundings when they're at a distance, than it was in the original UT. This I'm sure is simply something you need to get used to. I definately haven't noticed anything looking dark and dreary... Quite the opposite, I find everything looks quite vibrant and the environments seem much more immersive... which has taken some getting used to since I have to quit looking at the surroundings so much and get back to the game. 🙂

Stop craping on MrCoyote.

I loved unreal turnament but ut 2003 is junk!
I got that game the first day it came out and uninstalled it the next day.

I got a cool pc (p4 2.4 - 9700 pro etc) and I was not impressed.

It is more like a little kids game.

I am waiting for someone to release a good mod for it.
My two cents.

Waiting for a mod for UT2003 myself. The base U2K3 is fun, but I get bored of base DM and CTF quickly. Someone release a killer mod (even a clone of what is out there) and I'll be playing some more.

On a side note, I installed UT2K3 on my linux partition to see the game in OpenGL (yes, I know I could do the same in Win32). The game plays and looks exactly the same (not a bad thing), so if anyone is considering the game under linux, you have nothing to lose (maybe a few hours of your life when playing the game).

It just has a diferent feel to it, the bulky armors and stuff realy hurt the fast action aperance and I don't like how the weapons look alien cartoon like now instead of the nice weapons of the original UT.

The 2136 or whatever the latest patch is does improve it as it runs better with some weapons and character modifcation but still not that great. It just doesn't have that fight for your life and kill all that moves feel of UT.

Do all PC games have to have a common "feel" to them?

I don't think UT2003 looks or feels any different than a "PC Game". Feels a lot like Quake3 to me, actually, and people aren't hard to pick out to me at all.

I don't get why people think it's so fast, if anything, it's too SLOW! UT2K3 is OK, but I think it was a mistake to ditch Assault, SP is a major yawn and too many maps are lackluster. It's fun to catch some online play, but beyond it's looks, it's not as great an improvement as was expected.

ut2k3 looks great, i dont think it looks dark or dreary at all. play it with details maxed at 1024, and if it runs smoothly, then its awesome.

the levels and models look beautiful, especially on that tree level 🙂. i wouldnt say its too quickly paced, its fast, but just about right. imo.

I like how it looks, but(not being a console player) it may certainly have some console elements to it. The console version came out not too long ago, I wouldn't be surprised if the PC and console versions were somewhat similar in order to simplify developement.

My only complaint with UT2K3 is that it is impossible for me to tell which way the characters are looking, as the heads are somehwat buried in the weird human-biod suit things.

Ut2k3 fast?! BWAHAHAH, that crap's sooo slow! Play Quake, you'll know what fast is 😉

But either way, i don't think it looks much like a console game. Maybe the only thing that differentiates it from other fps games is the higher polygon counts, which might be reminiscient of console games.

How can it remind of you a console game? You're running the game at higher resolutions at higher speeds and with better controls.

UT2003 is a superb game and the best way to describe it is Quake3 with prettier graphics.

Was it developed by someone else besides Epic and the original UT developers?
Yes, Legend did a lot of the work on it.

UT2003 feels much more like a console FPS than compared to e.g., Quake3 or RTCW, imo. The cartoony graphics with too many, too-bright colours adds to it, but it's little to do with the res, colours etc, its the feel - though aim of course is a LOT faster. Soon as I picked it up I felt there was influence from Halo. I've played a lot of FPS on consoles and a lot of FPS on PC's. UT2003 is by far the PC game that feels most like its a console game, in my eyes anyway. Fanboys there seem to view it as an insult, personally I consider it just an observation.

Thats like saying Mortal Combat was Street Fighter + gore :/

Hey, if you don't like the gameplay speed, you can always adjust it.

I don't play consoles, so I wouldn't know. I tried to play a James Bond game on PS2 one time, and I think aiming with the controller sucks. I'd much rather have a mouse/keyboard.

The only things I don't like about UT2003 is you can't have the weapon on the left side and the gib system could be better.

Yep you said it correct. Oh well, I suppose there is nothing I can do about, except just sticking with the old UT. Gameplay is just too different compared to the original UT. IMO, original UT pwns.

That's probably why I like ut2k3 better than any previous version...it's a bit faster like quake. Although quake (3) is still much much faster paced. I also like what they did with the rocket. You get the added tactic of holding your shot to get 3 instead of 1 but you don't have blatant skill-less spam like you did with 6 rockets. You also don't have to give up the 'instant fire' capability of a single rocket. If somone would just recreate the Lithium mod from quake 2 I'd be overjoyed...nothing like a couple of hookmonkey's with rune's and railguns going at it.

😀

I think people are expecting all great PC games to be dark and dreary like Doom, our natural PC forefather of all things that are good.

I love UT2K3, not for being the perfect sequel to unreal but as a game in itself. As far as the console comments I dont understand that.. feels like a fast paced 3d computer shooter to me.

The original UT wasn't dark & dreary...

i never said it was.. but it seems the general sentiments that people expect a PC shooter to follow DOOMs lead with some kind of dark atmosphere.

I prefer UT, UT2K3 to DOOM/Quake based games for this reason (the lighter mood). In that respect, it does look like a console game.

dork

game speed = adjustable

UT2k3 rocks, but admittedly, it does look very similar to Unreal Championship (for Xbox)... though both have differences, many of the levels are the same, and so are the characters and weapons, but it looks much nicer on the comp imo.
