Unreal is impressive.

So I started Unreal yesterday and I got a bit far, but I guess not too far. I was impressed with the AI. Some just walk and shoot. Other smarter enemies dodge and try and fake you out. Say you are shooting at them - they will hide somewhere and move back and wait for you to appear to shoot at you. That's pretty impressive, even compared to some of today's games, the ones that I played anyway.

Didn't the original Unreal only really work correctly with 3Dfx GLide? I remember the Direct3D and OpenGL support was pretty flaky, at least on a TNT2 back in the day...

The AI in Turok 2 I found pretty impressive at times. Some nice dodging and hiding foes. Also the one who's in-built weapon overloaded and blew him/her/it up.... was funny for a while.

Theyve had tons of patches to fix the outstanding D3D and OGL issues, OGL is still a bit flaky, but D3D is solid.

Quoted for truth.

Also, it looks quite nice with some of the textures replaced with the S3TC ones from Unreal Tournament

Dude, this game is F-ing great. I think it might be even better than Half-life, but I'm not finished with Unreal yet, so I can't say for sure. The graphics are very nice too, using dynamic lighting, reflections and nice background textures. These are nice features that are missing in game even from 2002. The only think I could really complain about is the textures for the enemies and bad sound, which both kind of takes some fun away and the sometimes low polygon rocks in the outside levels, which are overlookable, but everything else is very solid. I think it has a killer engine.

But it runs so great on his R9800 with 40x AA.
Unfortunately, AA and AF don't work here.

I got the gun that shoots out little balls of goo, and right now, just entered a space ship where I saw a big inoperable bio-suit. That is where I am.

I'll have to pop it in and try it again. I finished way back in Glide mode. AA/AF don't work in D3D?

It was great, at the time. I always tried to run as fast as I could to catch that monster at the begining, heh. I remeber upgrading my ram from 32megs, to 64, and got a HUGE improvement in frames. Costed me an arm an a leg, but was worth it.

Ive got like 5 copies of that game. After awhile, it was bundled with lots of hardware I bought. Creative put it in everything, because of EAX. I remember those special EAX levels that was put out. There was no action, you just walked around and listened to the new sound effects. Seems so silly now.

Turning on AA has no effect. AF produces artifacts where the mipmaps are pushed back.

This is where a V5 5500 would kick but. FSAA was transparent and always worked :)

If you really want to have fun with unreal I, download the infiltration mod and get in on some online play. I was soo hooked on that mod for about 2 years. I'm sure there are people still playing it, it had a very small but loyal fanbase...

I like the main menu music of infiltration. I heard it was changed though, but I'm not sure.

I loved Unreal on my V2. That game rocked!
When you first met those giants throwing boulders it was amazing. The graphics still seem as good as a lot of the games released today.

You are right, Unreal is impressive.

Now, imagine playing on an A64 and Glide equipped nV40.

Right now, I'm at the Sunspire. If you don't know it by name, maybe you'll remember the time that the spiders came in.

I love this game. It is a masterpiece. Attention to detail anyone? If you haven't played this game, go play it! It's one of those must play games.

Unreal is one of the best games of all time. Even today it holds up well when compared to the latest titles.

Theyve had tons of patches to fix the outstanding D3D and OGL issues, OGL is still a bit flaky, but D3D is solid.
The game runs best under the latest unofficial OpenGL renderer.

Turning on AA has no effect. AF produces artifacts where the mipmaps are pushed back.
AF works under Catalyst 3.5 and earlier. AA works just fine on any driver.

I got the gun that shoots out little balls of goo, and right now, just
I think you mean the GES Bio-Rifle. Have you not played UT or UT2003?

I've played UT and 2004, but not extensively. I know enough to know that the BIO gun or rifle is awsome and some consider it a newbie weapon.

AI is really awsome. Sometimes they play dead. You shoot them and they fall, but they get up after 2 seconds. It's faked me out many times before I knew that they actually do that. I'm at the Gateway to Na-pali, and I shot this guy's leg off and I thought he was dead. I ran and I got hit by something, when I looked back, the guy was crawling on the floor still fireing slowly at me. Awsome.

Definitely agree with BFG, It holds up very well against some of today's best games. This maybe my altime favorite game.

Unreal was the king of all single player games for me until I played Deus Ex (the original) this past holiday season. DX unseated Unreal as the best SP game I've ever played, but Unreal is still number 2, and let's not forget that DX is built on Unreal technology.

Yes, Unreal was truly a milestone game - it was the first to use scripted sequences, 16 bit color, and it was the first major FPS to ship with the same toolset the developers had used to create it.

Add to that the amazing (for the time, and still pretty darn good today) AI, cool weapons, and awe inspiring levels, and you have one of the best games ever made. It's definitely high on my list.

Yes, the cleverness of the AI to dodge, shoot, retreat, and counter attack do impress me as well. The only thing I don't like is that they can do all this in a FREAKEN MILLISECOND! (<--exaggeration--)

They've even retreated to call for help. That's something amazing, Far Cry eat your heart out.
