Unreal II -- Will it be totally developed for the Geforce?

I hope it will be. I've had a hell lot of problems with UT 1......I believe it was optimized for the Voodoo then unlike Q3...any inputs on this topic? I'm pretty optimistic about this since Nvidia is the only maker right now.........

Unreal engine was built around Glide for 3d acceleration, then it was patched up bit by bit to run nicely in D3D, the UT engine superceded the Unreal engine and was pretty good in D3D mode but could stand some improvement.

I think the hope would be that Unreal II is built around D3D from the ground up for 3d acceleration.

It doesn't matter whether or not NVIDIA is the only 3d chipset manufacturer (which they aren't anyways), software companies must contend with the installed user base which includes everything from Integrated Intel 815 video, to ATI chipsets, to users of Voodoo3s, etc.

Just look at Quake 3, it was built around OpenGL but still had to support a similar range of video cards.

Think the min specs are like 500mhz and a first generation geforce.... going to be sweet

I hope it's not developed specifically for any card. Games should be optimized for the API, not a card.

I recall Epic talking about how there were working very closly with nVidia to develop their next engine,.

UT and Unreal both work pretty sweet on my Geforce2-GTS. The key with Nvidia is to find the right drivers and don't assume that newer drivers means better.

I am definitely looking forward to Unreal2! I bet it makes Doom3 look like just another Quake game...

*that should cause some panties to bunch* :D

Cherrypez, have you seen the Doom3 demo in the Geforce3 presentation movie? In my opinion it looks like anything but 'just another Quake game'... well it looks way too much better than any game I've ever seen, and I've seen the UT2 screenshots.

Remember, the new Unreal2 engine is going to have up to 100x the detail of Unreal. So, you're gonna need at least a Pentium 4 at 1.5Ghz or an AMD Athlon at 1.2Ghz and a Radeon2 or GeForce3 to get it to run smoothly.

Well so long as it is a "proper" game - not just another "bot fest" like Q3/UT - which is fun and nice to look at - but I like a nice "adventure" as in Half Life or the original Unreal etc :)

I would assume that they will not be optimising the game for Glide as it's not supporetd by the majority of current card makers - however companies are not always totally in touch with what will be "current" technology by the time the game is fully developed.

Well, since it's over a year away from release, who knows what it's developed for. A lot can happen in a year.

I can't wait for another Unreal game! Unreal used to be my favorite and now it is Unreal Tournament and hopefully Unreal2 will be next! :)

The unreal engine has been rebuild to support D3D. There are no Glide-
enhancements anymore. Glide is dead. This was a (not properly quoted)
statement from Tim Sweeney. The Unreal engine that is currently in development(Unreal,UT AND upcoming titles are ALL BEASED ON the SAME engine. The Unreal engine is enhanced step by step(like the MAX-FX technology) So U2 will be a D3D game. I still hope they implement a proper OpenGL code now that they got Vogel who did the Loki renderer.

As for specs, I would say this is too early too tell, but clearly it will need a 1ghz+ processor and a GF3/Radeon2 type card too run good
considering the cpu-intensiveness of the unreal engine.

It is possible, yes, but I wouldn't count on it. Much of Unreal's CPU-intensiveness comes from visibility determination algorithm tailored for minimizing overdraw "no matter the cost". 3DRealms took the algorithm out of the Unreal engine they're using for Duke Nukem Forever, and mentioned that it greatly decreased CPU utilization in exchange for slight overdraw increase. Certainly lots of similar optimizations will be made in Unreal Warfware engine (with which Unreal II is developed) along with other performance-enhancing features such as full DX8 and T&L support.

Considering this I'd say a 700MHz'ish CPU with top-notch video card such as GeForce3/Radeon2 will run the game very smooth at maximum detail. Overall I expect the new engine to behave more like Quake III; as in depending a lot more from video card's horsepower than that of CPU's.
