Unreal Engine 3 pics! Warning: It'll make Doom3 look like crap!!

These were posted awhile back.

Yes, they look good, but comparing it to Doom isn't neccessarily fair. Any game based on the engine is probably 2 years down the line, so it SHOULD look better than Doom.

Warning: It can't make Doom3 look like crap until its actually a playable game. Let me know when that happens.

I will say that I thought the video looked really cool. But I have the ability to realize that this game is A LONG WAY OFF.

My video card caught on fire just looking at this image.

But am I in the minority in thinking it doesn't look that great? No doubt its in early development, but right now all they have are a bunch of high poly models; the geography and its textures look like crap.

Where were they posted?

In this forum

Though there are a few additional pics here I think.

Yeah, NONE of the pics that I linked to are in that thread.

Ok, fine, here:

Engine looks absolutely fantastic... and of course it'll look better than D3, it's due for release 2 years after D3. If it wasn't better, what would be the point? They could just use the D3 engine.

I agree it looks fantastic. Too bad all realism will be lost when you shoot your ginormous gun at a flimsy little tree and nothing at all realistic happens to it. Maybe/Hopefully by the time it comes out I'll be wrong. 🙂

I certainly hope it looks like those pics, because they have a Frank Frazetta "feel" about them that I really like.

You should read the stuff at http://www.unrealtechnology.com , it will explain a lot about physics and AI and interaction and stuff like that...

couldn't you take those same models and slap them in Doom3 and they'd look 95% as good? What I'm saying is, aren't the awesome looking areas and models just a matter of having good level designers and texture artists?

Did any of you play the first two games? They're going to have to do more than make it look good for me to buy it, the first two were pretty but god awfully boring.

Sorry, but after I've seen doom I'm not really impressed by these pics. High poly models look pretty nifty but it's the same old static lighting with a cheesy character shadow added.

I think the pics look really great for the current generation of games but Doom 3 with realtime lighting is clearly the next generation. Look at http://premium.uploadit.org/tork64/unreal5.jpg to see what I mean. The lighting just sucks.

Also, graphics or not I was completely unimpressed with Unreal 2. Really pathetic follow up to a great original.

I doubt it will look that good when it ships. The sneak peak Unreal 2 pictures looked great until you actually saw them in the shipping game. Even Doom3 doesn't quite look as good as the early pics. What the engine can do and what is practical to ship is two different things. D3 in quality settings kicks a lot of PCs square in the nuts as is, and having super high poly count models isnt doing anyone any favors.

I agree with most posters here... you can make anything look good in a screenshot (and yes they are freaking amazing), but make it run at 60 FPS... that's a totally different story!

Still very promising though.

Like I mentioned in the other other, I don't see how that is any more impressive than Half Life 2, especially considering those shots are not in game. Here's the comparison shot I posted in the other thread:

Comparison

The Gman shot seems every bit as real.
