Your HW may be cheap (but you get what you pay for) and Software is expensive . . . . you eat up the price of that $400 videocard with 20 overpriced console games.

You don't need to upgrade AFTER a game is released. i knew from game demos that my aging r8500 could not display the DX9 eyecandy i craved so i spent $223 for a 9800xt last Spring. . . . it plays EVERY new game - i have played since the upgrade - FC/PK-BOoH/Riddick/Max Payne: FoMP/HL2/Doom iii/DuesEx:IW/Thief - DS at either 10x7 or 11x8 with everything Hi and On and Max and Usually 2xAA + 4x or 8xAF

See, i researched ahead . . . . i realized that Doom iii more or less required 256MB of vRAM for 'hi' and other games would probably too - in fact, Painkiller:BoOH says you need 256MB to have everything on. That's why i picked the 9800xt last Spring . . . . and it has turned out to be an excellent upgrade for the a lucky hot deal price.

Not everyone can find a 256Mb 9800Pro for such a cheap price and be able to flash it to XT. And I can't find a reason why upgrading before the game release is better than after.

LOTS of people did on this forum (ALL of the cards were flashable) . . . probably more than a hundred just from the thread i posted in Hot Deals and then a bits later it was only a couple of dollars more and there was another big thread.

You may not be able to find a reason, but i did and i thought i'd share.

imo, you upgrade your video card when you need to and when the price is right. ;) Not dependant on ANY game.

I agree with some of what you said. When you find a super hot deal it's good to upgrade, but you have to keep the games in mind. In 2003 it wasn't worth it to shell out 300 bucks (not even 250$) for a 9800Pro IMO since most of the games ran more than fine on an 8500 or a 4200TI(there were no DX9 games at that time). And you can't always find hot deals such as the one you got.

By the way, I hate the ( ) smiley :p

Both of em? or just the eyeroll?

i didn't get a 9800p . . . i had a r8500 in '03 that i paid $125 for that lasted me till Dx9 games (beginning with Thief DS). i personally believe you can ALWAYS find a hot deal if you are patient and ready to 'jump'.

i am just giving another POV.
