Didn't Unreal say that their focus was going to be on iOS and Android would follow if they chose to go that route?

I posted a thread a while back about Unreal 3 for iPhone. Within the post I mentioned if its going to Android then most likely only Samsung Galaxy S would run it well. I was then thrown under a bus.

Then looky here....a Samsung Galaxy S running Unreal 3.....

I think slowly, a lot of the popular games such as Angry Birds and whatnot will be crossplatform.

Hate to rain on the EVO's parade, but Fruit Ninja is exhibiting touch lag. Not the games fault however.

The Unreal 3 demo for the iPhone is free and is called citadel. And, yes this has nothing to do with Android, but while I think a lot of people knew there was an Unreal demo for the iPhone/iPod touch I don't know if it's widely known that it's freely available (instead of just a YouTube video)

I played around with the Citadel demo and, while I think it's a seriously impressive graphics demo, I can't see how it would make a great game on either the iOS or Android OS's because the onscreen controls are hard to use just to navigate the game without anyone shooting at you or anything. Whenever I show it to anyone, they inevitably get tripped up by the controls.

Before I can get excited about any FPS game on a touchscreen device, I think someone needs to come up with a better control system...

Buttons. They are a gift from heaven.

I can't wait till Android finally gets a good set of games on it.

A game called Fart For Your Life came out this week, it's .50 or something for a 1st week special. I took the plunge and it's a pretty fun little time waster. Definitely worth the 50 cents I spent on it. Outside of that I have Homerun Battle 3d, which I looooved on my iPhone. The Android version is kind of meh though.

Android needs ZombieVille USA & Ninja Vs Pirates. UGH I need to go Google and see if either are being made for the Android.

Buttons would be better, but the citadel demo has the best touch screen controls that I've seen on any game.

Not sure if you noticed, but the virtual dual joy sticks are positioned dynamically. Meaning the joysticks aren't stationary. Every time you touch the screen, the joystick resets back to the center of your thumb. I haven't seen a game implement this as of yet.

Buttons are handy and probably most of the solution to the problem - but even though Android handsets have most buttons and phones with keyboard, Android guys can't get too smug because 4 buttons are still too few and you can't map several of them to the game without losing functionality, and lots of Android phones don't have keyboards. I see it as a problem with both iOS and Android - although the openess of Android helps (I can't see lots of Bluetooth controllers getting approved by Apple... but maybe they'll surprise me).

I did notice... although it was more like, "that's weird... I swear the joystick/pad thing was over there...". I'm still not sure that I love this feature, although I agree it's unique.

Maybe my friends and I are uncoordinated klutzes but we'd always end up looking up at the sky somehow stuck walking against a wall or something. Perhaps we'd get used to it... but my first time I had a really hard time with it. Even if you love the control system, I don't see how effective it would be if there were real combat involved.

I'm a gamer. I play PC games, and I play a lot of iPhone games - my current favorite is Carcassonne which is simply awesome if you like turn-based strategy (AI is almost too good... the jerk :) ). Anyway, it's not like I don't want good games... but I want the interface to improve the game experience - not get in the way. Meteor Blitz has a similar system (although top-down arcade) and I find the controls for that mostly annoyign too. Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N5_9OMCjL8

I think the Citadel demo looks great... but I wouldn't buy it to play unless I could get some sort of gamepad to connect to it over Bluetooth.

I don't see how phones could ever really replace a dedicated gaming device. Some games just won't work without a controller period. Mario using touchscreen is a disaster. Using the wii controller via bluetooth works like a charm.

I enjoy Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja because they are made with the controls in mind. So, for the phone, lets focus on games that should work okay on it, like a diablo clone. :D A virtual thumbstick to move the dude around, tap on the screen wherever to attack.

Why over bluetooth? I would want a gamepad that encapsulates the whole iPhone and connects using the Dock Connector. I think that would work really well.

I just demoed minisquadron lite, what a fun game. Thinking about buying it. love what they do for the controls.
Fruit Ninja is awesome. Way worth the 99 cents. Reminds me of the Wii Sports game with the swords.
Thanks for the heads up guys.

My understanding was that iOS 3 (or Cocoa Touch 3.0 or whatever it was called then) brought in support for third party hardware accessories through the dock connector. One of the things they mentioned was controllers for games.
