Yep, keeping up with the competition, except for the fact that the engine won't be released in any form until late next year at the earliest.... Engines progress, it happens
Don't count id out yet either, as I'm sure the Doom III engine will be evolving over time too - just look at what the Quake III engine was capable of:)

Unreal Engine 3.
Not Unreal 3 Engine.

(Those videos posted by Czar are new ones from GDC)

Yeah, but so far I'm not impressed. QuakeIV and CoR both look just as ugly as D3... I thought Q3 was pretty ugly too, but I did play one game using the Q3 engine for years, SOFII, which looked better than any other Q3 game.

I was very impressed with the City video. The depth of the city that the car was driving through was pretty amazing to me.

I thought MOHAA looked pretty good as well as RTCW. ID makes my favorite engines so far, although I'm pretty impressed with the Unreal engine. The Unreal engine looks good without stressing hardware too bad.

give it time - some of the most impressive QIII based games didn't come out for 2-3 years after the engine was released (more in the case of call of duty)

Given some great textures with some more varied lighting conditions, and I'm sure the DoomIII engine will shine. Just look at the outside scenes (the mars landscape) in DoomIII to start to get a feel of just how good the game can get:)

Oh, and for the record, I too am drooling over the Unreal III engine - I've always liked their graphical style
