so far i've only seen the 2.5" drives that draw the power from those ports, or have their own external supply. sux cuz i need an external drive for my operating systems class so i can move my linux installation wherever i need to. i don't want ot have ot carry an extra power supply

I have one right next to me at this very moment that has a PS/2 pass-through plug that provides power for the hard drive and enclosure. $15 at CompUSSR. It also can draw power from an additional USB plug. (besides the one it uses to transfer data)
A 3.5" or a 2.5"? Make and model of the product, if possible?Originally posted by: yukichigai

i would just buy a laptop drive...or a usb pen drive depending on the size of the os installs
You could pick up a smaller laptop drive & enclosure.Originally posted by: KidViciou$
okay, well thanks for the help guys! i'm now even considering just making do with a 5 gb partition on my lappy, and just baring the wireless transfer to a lab machine to make sure the kernel works

yea, but the laptop drive will cost more than i'm willing to spend. i was looking to spend only $30 and use a hard drive i already had laying around. i'll take a quick look around though
