i thought thats what most of them did...but i've never used one...now that i think bout it...would a usb port be able to supply the power needed to run a drive like that? maybe a 2.5" laptop drive, though...

Not aware of any 3.5" solution. Only 2.5" powered solutions (which am certain you are aware of).

Is a 2.5" enclosed PS/2 powertap solution not an option?

so far i've only seen the 2.5" drives that draw the power from those ports, or have their own external supply. sux cuz i need an external drive for my operating systems class so i can move my linux installation wherever i need to. i don't want ot have ot carry an extra power supply

i would just buy a laptop drive...or a usb pen drive depending on the size of the os installs

I have one right next to me at this very moment that has a PS/2 pass-through plug that provides power for the hard drive and enclosure. $15 at CompUSSR. It also can draw power from an additional USB plug. (besides the one it uses to transfer data)

A 3.5" or a 2.5"? Make and model of the product, if possible?

unfortunately, pen drive won't be big enough. i guess i'll look at the 4 gb micro vault i saw, but i already have a 40 gb sitting around collecting dust

In searching a bit more now, I find a few 5.25" PS/2 powered 1394a enclosures, and one or two 3.5" PS/2 USB powered enclosures. The details are very sketchy, even on the manufacturer's site. Would say such a device is not all that promising, and if actually exists (no confirmation from yukichigai it seems), might not function in the fashion desired.

Well, considering a 3.5" drive uses a 12v and 5v supply, and usb is what, 5v, I don't think you'll find one.

You could pick up a smaller laptop drive & enclosure.

yea, but the laptop drive will cost more than i'm willing to spend. i was looking to spend only $30 and use a hard drive i already had laying around. i'll take a quick look around though

sell the 3.5" drive to get a little more fundage for the drive and enclosure...or trade it on here for what you need...

well the thing is i had it in a raid setup, and the other drive failed. so i don't want to screw someone over by tradingwith them and then the drive fail a week later. at least if i were using it, i would have a backup on my comp elsewhere so a failure wouldn't be that bad, but i definitely appreciate the suggestion. i didn't think about that

as far as the firewire goes, my laptop has an unpowered firewire port so no go, also the lab computers at school only have usb and not firewire

Nevermind, I'm an idiot, it's a 2.5", says so on the box. I'm not good at measuring things by appearance. Sorry. :/

How much space do you need? There may be other $30 solutions to your problem.
