I thought the Blu-Ray players would have to have two lasers in order to be backward-compatible, hence increasing the cost?

I've heard this too. However, some reports stated that both HD-DVD and BD required two lasers, others stated that only BD required two lasers, and even more stated that only one laser would be used.

I think the "all of them" camp can be discounted. After all, existing DVD players can handle two laser wavelengths with a single laser (audio CDs use 780nm [infrared] and DVDs use 635-650nm [red]).

The big question is if the laser in the BD drives can refocus depending on the substrate thickness (0.1mm vs 0.6mm). Existing lasers in DVDs have some ability to refocus to different points in order to support multi-layer discs. However, that's usually a difference of just a fraction of a millimeter. This is a difference of half a centimeter.

Is it true HD-DVD's req is the ability to make backups while Blue-Ray makes it nearly impossible without breaking the law to make a legal backup?

If that is true then HD-DVD for me.
Actually, neither format allows for archival. Both working groups are vigorously implementing anti-copying mechanisms in their format.

However, the BluRay Consortium is attempting to go one step further by making it so that "chipped" players will be rejected. I don't know how this will be done, but I've heard of rumours such as requiring a phone or IP connection so that new firmwares could automatically be updated, much like DirecTV and Dish do with their receivers. Don't have an updated firmware? You don't get to play new discs.
If they do that then Blu-Ray will die the same death as did Divx.

Agreed. I came close to chipping my Toshiba DVD player to remove the region restrictions as well as the fast-forward blocker. Instead I got a DVD-R drive and now I archive my DVDs as region free, Macrovision free and without stupid ads & FBI warnings. Had I not had the option of authoring my own discs, there would be a mod chip in my player right now.

/hated when promos started showing up on VHS and DVD media
//hates the idea of seeing them return on hi-def media

Ads and FBI stuff don't bother me so much. Gives me time to the get the popcorn popped. 😉

Thats why I loved laser-disc. No ads, no menus, just played the damn movie. I still have 100s of laser discs. Spent 1200 bucks 6 years ago to get a combo LD/DVD player. Well worth it.

The new PS3 will come with BLu-ray, which I think will be a huge advantage to winning the format wars. Why would someone pay for a Hd-DVD player if they already have a Bluray in their PS?

Assuming the price is good, the PS3 could have the same effect as the PS2 did when it came out cheaper than any commercial DVD players of the time. They will own the Japanese market. Toshiba would be smart to sign a contract ro get HD's in the Xbox360.

Which format are Republicans backing and which one Democrats. Sounds like the BR standard is more liberal with its greater capacity.

This question has relevance how? Or is this just a very unfunny sarcastic joke?

I can't believe somebody named ToeJam asked me that.

I can settle this arguement definitively. The industry is watching me. When I adopt a format and invest a significant amount of money into it, they will discontinue it

Hehe, we must buy the same products.

We are programmed to receive. I bet LunarRay prefers Blu-Ray.

I defer to your wisdom on the matter! I know that you'll have read every article and scholarly work on the subject. I on the other hand would wait for a clear winner to emerge and then maybe purchase the technology.

LunarRed... hmmm has no ring to it.. I'd prefer Blu-Ray if for no other reason than the sound of hyphens in the otherwise confused muddle or electronics... and of course the second full moon-beam of the month..

Bump.

30GB HD DVD-R discs. More room for your collections of p0rn.

Going to be absolutely essential when the RW witch hunt on US citizens begins and they're forced to hide it in a hurry!

I wonder why they bother with disks anymore? It seems that by the time they agree on a standard and start manufacturing players, the flash cards will have about the same capacity. I think we're up to, what, 16GB flash cards now? Two DVD movies with the current compression standards.

cost.....you have any idea how much flash costs compared to a disc that probably ends up costing maybe a buck or two to make once they get the process refined??

well pc mag says the discs will require special monitors to watch🙁 damn them with the content protection. all the high resolution wide screen monitors we have now are useless for hddvd/bluray apparently. vista will help enforce this bullsh*t.
