I would say it would wear off over time. Time could be 1 day up to 1 year. It just depends on how good of a job you do. I used a Defogger Kit from Auto Zone for $6.99. You can do it the free way but its just a higher risk of it not lasting as long as a better conductor.
The picture on the far right shows the pencil marks. Tape really doesn't work well as the space is so small.
If click on the picture a 2nd time you will get a much closer look.
No the cpu is under the HSF so the marks won't wear off
Hey guys,
I unlocked my T-bird 800 using the pencil trick and it seems that it has worn off. I can no longer get 1000mHz. When I set my multiplier at 10, my startup screen reports 600mHz. Any news on this? I am using the MSI K7T Pro2 A motherboard.
mcgrath: I had the same problem with my TB800. I also did the pencil trick, and after two months, the CPU started @700 instead of 1000. Well, after covering the bridges again, everything runs fine now!
Using a conductive pen sure is the best method to unlock the CPU, but I´m satisfied with the pencil trick. After about two months, I have to cover the bridges again, but that ´s no problem...
The pencil markings can be cleaned by using a rubber and/or alcohol. The nail polisher of my girlfriend did also work!
I used the Loctite method and my D700 is at 1ghz with no problems. I feel this is the best method, the defogger stuff goes thru alot of Temp changes like that of CPU. Used the pencil trick at first and had no problems just didn't want to experience it wearing off.
