Unlocking GTX465 to GTX470

This got me pretty excited (I remember the ATI X800GTO2 unlocking!!). Apparently it is possible:

From Skymtl of Hardwarecanucks:
"I will pop in a word of caution here.

Some of us have been trying this with the cards released to reviewers prior to launch which ARE retail samples. Of the 12 cards we have tested, 4 "unlocked", 3 recognized the BIOS but didn't "unlock" and 5 are now paper weights. Nothing was going to be published for several days until we found a way to successfully flash the dead cards back to their original state. Seems like caution has once again been thrown into the wind though.

You SERIOUSLY do this at your own risk ESPECIALLY if you don't feel comfortable reading translated Romanian.
"

So a bit disappointing and YMMV. 🙁

I remember unlocking some shaders on a vanilla 6800. That was cool but you didn't risk bricking your card like this can.

I remember unlocking my Radeon 9500 and GeFork 6200 (free upgrade to 6600 was SO CASH, I also got it up to 600MHZ core). Best $25 I ever spent!

So the disabled GPC is not laser cut? Interesting, I thought Nvidia would be all over that by now. Still, I wouldn't risk it 😀

I thought these parts were binned as they weren't stable with all shaders etc.....so whats the point of unlocking unstable modules?

so from that 12 card sample there's a 33% chance you'll end up with a 470, a 25% chance you'll end up with a 465, gaining nothing and losing nothing, and a 42% chance you'll end up with a paperweight...granted a larger sample size would be much more reassuring, this preliminary report is not promising in the least.

why not just get a 5830 or 5850? i understand that an overclocked 5850 is comparable to a stock 5870, yes? if you're even considering trying to unlock a 465, trying to overclock a 5850 sounds far more promising, especially considering that the 465 is hotter and noisier anyway.

I did that!!! It worked perfectly and was rather easy using rivatuner....

This one sounds a bit risky to say the least....

I guess if it doesnt work out and you brick it you can always tell newegg you got a doa card. lol

This forum does not promote fraud.

I strongly suggest nobody takes this idea and puts it into practice.

Edit:

I was being sarcastic and would not advocate actually doing that. I feel bad even when I return something for a legitimate reason.

OK cool, didnt see this until after I responded. 🙂

n/m - made a post about higher voltage and overclocking, but than realized you can adjust the voltage anyway.

wow.. a near 50% chance of bricking a $280 card. Spend the extra $70 and buy a 470 and dont worry about bricking anything.

To bad there hasn't been a driver level unlock found like you could with the vanilla 6800 that some have been talking about.

I had the 6800 (Still own it) in my main pc and I could get within 10% of the 6800gt performance. It was the ram that was the limiting factor. I could get it from 700mhz to right about 900mhz. The core was a bad ocer. I could hardly get to 6800gt speeds on the core. I remember just unlocking the 16 pipes gave a solid 8% increase in performance in the benches I ran.

Mine perfectly unlock to 16 pipes and 6 shaders. I got one for someone else and it would unlock to 16 pipes but not the extra shader.

I bought mine in the $140's iirc. Mine came with a couple resisters broke off. But it still worked with no problems! 🙂
