Only the "B" stepping Thoroughbreds (TBreds, NOT TBirds! :p) are BIOS-unlocked on CERTAIN boards. I know on the Epox 8KHA boards they are..but other than that, I don't know. So, this is an educational bump for you. :)

unless he is infact referring to a tbird....;)

also ive heard that the tbred 'a' (aka 1700+, 1800+) are also unlocked....
i konw asus a7v8x unlocks them (kt400)
asus a7n8x most likely will when teh new bios comes out

almost all kt400 and nforce2 will...just decide on a board and then look it up, much easier that way ;)

Hello my bud. :) I've been in CPU/OCing for a few hours myself, tonight...trying to get the whole Tbred-B stepping thing sorted. Bah...my head hurts!!! I've read that the lower-clocked TBreds, the 1700/1800s are unlocked, but they are a mixed-bag. One guy has his 1700 B-step running at 1.9GHz :Q (not bad for a $52 chip, huh? :)) Someone else can't get much past the stock clock....

I came this close to buying one of the 2100 B-steps of Newegg...but I am going to wait unitl Monday to see what a few folks are geting out of it. :) I just bought an Eox 8RDA+ and a 80 Western Digital 8mb buffer HD...I'm hurtin' already. :Q

I'm in the same boat as ncage and wonder whether my KR7A-133 will be able to bios unlock a Thouroughbred-B Athlon. If not, can you unlock the chip manually with the pencil trick?

If someone might indulge me, will either a 300W -or- 350W Antec PSU suffice for a 1700+ XP Thouroughbred-B Athlon?

Also, since the Thouroughbred-B uses a 0.13 micron processor and therby generates relatively less heat then the Thouroughbred-A would that temperature improvement allow one to use a lower rated CFM hsf than typically used with the Thouroughbred-A?

Cheers!

A quality branded 300-350watt PSU, ala Antec, Enermax, Sparkle will do nicely. Always better to have more an not need it than the reverse. Get the 350-watt or if a few dollars more won't hurt, a 400-watt.

.13um processors do run cooler..at their rated speeds. As soon as you start OCing you raise the temps.
