how exactly do you unlock AMD's dual core processors?

Just get the right chip (black editions). They come unlocked. You just use your BIOS.

If it has ACC options, its a piece of cake. Enable it and you're set.

doesn't have to be BE to unlock cores I don't think.(?) Unlocking cores, not overclocking them by raising the multiplier. I think you're confusing the two.
"Unlocking cores" means utilizing the other 2 cores on the die that have been disabled by AMD for either speed binning reasons, or to fill a market segment.
This is confusing because traditionally if a processor was "unlocked" it meant you could increase the multiplier on the CPU.

yea what i'm asking is how do you unlock cores on AMD cpus? whats the name of the setting in the bios, and is it a simple "yes it works" or "no it doesn" in the bios? or do u need to test for stability?

Mostly, just set Advanced Clock Calibration to "Auto." It's not a simple yes or no if it works. Use CPU-z to see if the cores are unlocked and you'll have to run some sort of burn-in test like Prime95 or ORTHOS to see if the unlocked cores cause any instability.

720 BE for my cpu and Asus M3A78-EM mb link
There's a guide with an Asus mobo, though slightly different chipset/model. linky

I don't have any experiences with Asus boards, so I can't help much unfortunately.

excellent guy, even though hes not a native english speaker, his guide was a breeze to read through. too bad i've already bought 2x quad core athlon 620's already and 2x Gigabyte 785-us2h MB =(

I bought the 720 as a compromise between the dual and quad core chips...the price was fantastic, $99 for a guaranteed 3 cores. Right now I'm running it locked and overclocked to 3 Ghz. I still have my old 7950 gt video card in the box so I'm going to wait until I upgrade the video card before I push it much farther.

I will say this, it does concern me that when it's unlocked to 4 cores I can't monitor temps. But that's just me I guess. I'm able to run the Bad Company 2 beta at 1680x1050 with all low options selected and it's very playable. I can't wait until I upgrade that video card.

Hmm... I'll have to try that as well. I've been using hwmonitor, but I only get one temp for the whole cpu, assuming that's not something else.... I just don't like using speedfan much since I don't like having to install it.

lol, I love it, lets me control the fanspeed of my CPU depending on temps. Keeps my fan and PC silent until the CPU hits 63C (a rare feat), then turns up fan to 45%, and 100% if I get past 68C.

Heh, I don't have a fan on my Scythe Ninja to control. :)

plug into mobo?
My cpu heatsink doesn't actually have a fan attached to it whatsoever. It relies on the top and rear fan, and possibly the side fan, on pulling air through it.

Anyways, speedfan doesn't report temps for specific cores on my B50, which was what I was kind of expecting to find, but it's not a big deal.

It's just that I'm a bit confused why I got two temps for the two cores when my 550BE remained locked, but after unlocking, I can only get one temp for the cpu.

Yeah I had 3 temps for my 720BE before unlocking, now 1.
I don't really know what I would do with 4...lol...
