Unlocked Iphone questions

So I am just jumping on board trying to get some basic info about unlocked iphones. So any links or info is appreciated. I want to get an iphone but I have t-mobile and am extremely happy with it. If I get an unlocked iphone do i have to get a data plan with t-mobile as well? Also what functionalty do i lose by unlocking it for use with t-mobile?

the only functionality that i saw is visual voicemail, as that is an att only feature. otherwise, you dont lose anything else. the jailbreak of 1.1.1 got released the other day so its looking good for iphone users who havent updaded yet.

good to know what about data plans. I know the iphone and connect to wifi hot spots and you don't get charged but what about other times. I know at&t uses the edge network. Would I have to sign up for a t-mobile data plan as well?

data plans...since its unlocked, i dont think you have to buy a data plan (but of course you get charged per byte like every other single carrier if you dont have a data plan)...but if you use edge a lot, then i would HIGHLY recommend that you get a data plan...or just use wi-fi.

I don't have a data plan, and just use it with wi-fi. I'm going to college so wi-fi is widely available so it doesn't bother me.

I'm still running 1.0.2 I kept hearing horror stories of bricked iPhones after upgrading to 1.1.1, and since then haven't really been following the unlocking stuff. I guess I should look back into it though, it sounds like they're making progress
