Unlocked apple

If I buy a factory unlocked apple phone, and I do an OS update, what happens to the unlock?

If it's a legally unlocked phone (not from Jailbreak or some shady 3rd party company), it remains unlocked. The unlock is set in the hardware and will carry across iOS updates.
