I would of course have to add/more stuff, cause it would take me about a week to figure out what exactly I want. Like some USB external drives and writers, but that's a good start.

I dunno, I'd only buy it for bragging rights and the cool Red and Blue LEDS. A few thousand blue CC in that enclosure would rock. Also, I don't know about anything you've listed above, I'd only run ]3SMark2001 on it.

Then I'd complain b/c I was 2,300,348,394 marks short of what I expected 😉

Chiz

Wouldn't you be limited by your graphics card 😛

Can you tell us how much money you have.... like in dollar amount? Because the way this thread is going, you are never gonna buy whatever is listed, like a 45" plasma monitor. 😛

Lian-Li PC-76 server case

I have no idea how much all this crap is gonna cost since I can't find the price of those SSD drives... It should be a nice system.

[insert annoying buzzer sound here]
You're both wrong. First off, it's a little much to say "make them at least 72 gig drives," since those are the largest 15K's that Seagate offers. Secondly, the X15's are not the fastest drives on the planet. If you don't agree with me, check out StorageReview.com. It blows away every other drive.

Alright, I know you all want to know what I think would be the best computer. I'm going about this assuming that I'm a billionare and I want to buy my nephew the absolute top system available. Why? Because babbling off something about getting the next Cray supercomputer isn't as fun. Realistic ideas are better.

Intel 3.06GHz P4
Asus P4T-533
Enermax EG651P-VE FMA 550 Watt PS
Lian-Li PC-78 case
(12) Seagate Cheetah 73GB 15K.3 SCSI U-320 drives (on 3 separate 4-channel RAID cards in 0+1 arrays)
(3) Adaptec 5400S's (4-channel U-160 SCSI RAID cards; no, they're not U-320, but it makes 0 difference performance-wise)
ATI AIW 9700 Pro
Hercules Fortisimmo 2 7.1 (Creative sux!)
Win 2k Pro (I dislike XP and HATE 98)
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0a (still the best mouse, though I hate MS too)
Samsung SynchMaster 241MP 24" Widescreen LCD (25ms response time is better than Sony's 40ms)

After those basics were down, I'd pay some tech junkie to build me a watercooling setup for the GPU, chipset Northbridge and Southbridge (can you even cool the Southbridge?), CPU, and all 12 hard drives. Why not?! Oh, and don't forget the Peltier!

That's $12k alone for the hard drives. If you give me $25k I'll put the whole thing together for you. Actually, I'd have to do the math first....

Hmm lets see my dream machine.

P4 3 ghz overclocked to 3.5 to 4 ghz with water cooling.
All In Wonder ATI 9700 pro
4 gigs of the fastest RDRAM or as much as the mobo supports!
10 Terbytes of a solid state drive or the newest Seagate 15000 rpm HDs. 🙂
Four Liteon 52x 24x 52x cd-rws so i can burn 4 cds at once 🙂
100.1 speakers. I know they don't make them but buy the extra speakers to put all around you in a big room like the size of a theater.
Then a monitor as big as the IMAX screen but 6 of them. One in front of you, in the back, left, right, above you, and below you. (So when you game you feel like you are in the game! Espically plane and car games! Plus even FPS,etc)
Huge Lian-Li PC-70 or bigger case with ATI's Name like painted really good with the animals they use on the ATI 9700 pro box. I think they are dogs but not sure. I could be wrong. (Here is the picture of the silver animals i am talking about http://images2.newegg.com/productimage/14-102-237-02.JPG I want the whole round circle thing on the side of my lian-li pc-70 case with the lights from the inside making you beable to see the image in the dark!)
Fastest DVD-RW drive.
floppy drive.
etc.

I know my dream machine would cost a lot of money but i wouldn't mind having that kind of system.

since u got a lot of money..can u give some of ur money to help me built my dream home network? 😉

- 2 x high end server (this is me domain controller)
- storage will be either SAN or NAS
- Gigabit LAN
- cisco px firewall
- gigabit switch
- 2MB internet line
- 8 x OhMyGod spec pc

thats all for now..

Unlimited money, build me your dream machine.

Anyone else get a MAJOR BONER when they read that? OMFG, unlimited money for a computer.... DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.

The most expensive thing in the system i would build would be the hard drives, roflmao

Quad Xeons, fastest money can buy
4 gigs of ram
large ass server case that'll fit the monster of a motherboard that you'll have to use
watercooling system->freaking silver(pure silver :Q) waterblocks for everything, hell, thats like $2k right there
the rest?
like freaking 12 Seagate 72gig SCSI drives, w00t for RAID 5
best everything else you can buy right now, so:
9700 pro
any freaking sound card that is not creative 😉
the 24" SONY trinitron sounds good, its like $2k

wow, i need a life, if i had said system, i would probably take it to bed with me and make sweet, sweet love to it...

My "dream machine" would be one that would do my job for me so I could stay home and game all day on my regular ol' PC.

Seagate 4-36GB 15k Cheetah 3's striped
Teac 1.44mb floppy
Plextor 2-48x writers
Ati 9700 pro
Hercules Fortisimmo 2 7.1
Sony 24" wide angle monitor
Microsoft blue tooth periphs (mouse and keyboard)
Microsoft WinXP pro
Microsoft OfficeXP

I will build it for you for 13k. Cash in advance.

I'd probably go with something like that.. except I'd take the bluetooth keyboard, but I'd rather have a Logitech MX500 for my mouse.. 🙂

I'd also need a DVD player, wouldn't care for that monitor (I wouldn't have the room, assuming it's a CRT) and get the SGI 18" LCD.. 😀

I'd also like more storage space though.. I want 360GB min. 😛

Well, without getting into all the specifics of mobo's, etc, this is what I would buy:

-- Take the fastest Xeon and run the most of SMP the fast Xeon is capable of (2way, 4, 8, etc)
-- Whatever case could hold the beast above, I'm not big on looks of it.
-- Max the ram, 4+ gigs
-- An incredible fibre channel raid array (using caching controlelrs), using 15k RPM drives to boot and load data
-- A solid state drive for all of my favorite games that need to load levels in a very short amount of time
-- Radeon 9700 Pro (fastest card, as of writing this post)
-- Hercules 7.1 sound card (gotta love the breakout box)
-- 24" Sony wide monitor (super high res screen, with incredibly high refresh rate)
--For sound system, no crappy computer speaking anything, we're talking a REAL Marantz receiver with a killer system setup.
-- MS Natural Keyboard Pro
-- Logitech MX500 mouse
-- Everglide mousing surface
-- Telfon feet for the mouse
-- Some beast of a caching, SCSI controller to handle all my CD/DVD drives and solid state hard drives
-- UW SCSI DVD-ROM reader (doesn't matter whom, just needs to be scsi)
-- UW SCSI DVD-R (doesn't matter whom, just needs to be scsi)
-- UW Plextor SCSI CDROM (fastest audio ripping I can get)
-- Gigabit NIC
-- DOS 6.22
-- Windows 3.11 for workgroups

That pretty much sums up what I would build if I had the cash, time, etc.

vash

Windows 3.11 for Workgroups!!!??? WTF

Better be careful with the 'unlimited' money requirement (or lack off). I could easily wish for those 1000 processor clusters being sold by IBM.....😉

Sorry, I didn't understand the full impact of 'unlimited' money at first.

If I had unlimited money, here's what I would do:
1) Start my own CPU company and hire the team of engineers that designed the Alpha processors from Digital/Compaq/HP/now Intel. Have them design the best processor only for me, and release the earlier generations for the consumer public.

2) Start my own Super Computer systems company and hire engineers that designed Cray's, Alpha Wildfire systems, SGI systems, etc. Have them build me a super computer using processors from 1) above.

3) Hire Linus Torvalds and Dennis Ritchie to make an open source version of the Plan9 OS to run on my super computer. Also to design the OS for complete scalability (upwards and downwards) so it runs on any platform, big or small.

4) (The most important step) Hire Microsoft as consultants so I could figure out their future licensing scheme, and do the exact opposite: pay people to use my OS from step 3) (hey, you said unlimited money).

I think it would only take a few months to bankrupt Microsoft and put Bill Gates into the poor house after step 4 is put into effect.

You could get a Mac dual 1.25 gHz system for $5000.

Yep. ... Sure could. ... And I could also beat myself in the head with a ball-pean hammer!!! Ferchrissakes people. GET OVER IT!!! MACS BLOW!! They aren't fast at ANYTHING!!! There is not a single application (assuming it's ported for both PC and Mac which almost every program that has a Mac port is) that runs faster on a Mac than on a decent PC. Lemme see.... 2 1.25GHz procs or 1 3.06GHz HYPERTHREADED PROCESSOR!!!

Sorry for the caps and what not. I can't freaking stand Macs. "I really like OS X though." I DON'T CARE! Why in the hell would I pay more for a system whose OS was, admittedly, better when it would run all of my programs slower? Good god, I'm actually beating my head against my desk at the same time I'm typing this. Somebody asks what you'd do with an unlimited amount of money, and the first thing you thought of was a Mac. This girl at work today was telling me about how she sold her Mac, which had dual 500MHz processors, a GF4 Ti4600 graphics card and 768MB of RAM so she could buy a system with dual 1.25GHz procs, a GF4 Ti4600 and 1GB of RAM. The whole tie I sat there and thought, "You know what you could upgrade your PC to with just the money you sold your old Mac for? Hell, you could buy a top-of-the-line PC that runs twice as fast as that Mac for half the price and still have enough left over to buy leather furniture and a good TV with. That's ridiculous.

I hope and pray for the day that there are no more Macs left.

Sorry for the tirade. I'm starting to lose it.

Yes, I was wondering why Macs are supposedly better for graphics stuff. My brother is a graphic designer so he has one from college but is thinking of switching to PC. I asked him why they are used for graphic design so much when you could get a much faster PC for much less and he says he has no idea .. :Q
