I have a phone with the Cricket service here in NC. The service area is pretty big (the local area, about 1/4 of the state. You get unlimited calls to anywhere in your calling area (the area in which you can use your phone) with no long distance fees, but the downside is that you can't call anywhere outside of your calling area, and obviously once you're outside the calling area, you can't call anyone. There's no roaming option at all, the service just drops off. I pay about $33/month with no options (you can get Caller ID and Voicemail tho), and since I very rarely go outside of my calling area, I think it's a good plan. Calls that would cost extra on a regular phone (extended area, not quite long distance) are free on the Cricket. You can, however, pay ahead for long distance time if you want the option of calling numbers outside your calling area -- I think it's about $0.05 per minute.
Customer service has also been pretty good. Some months I've paid so close to the due date that I'm sure the payment has gotten there late, but I've never been charged late fees, and one month, for whatever reason, I didn't get a bill at all, and apparently wasn't charged for it either. There's also no yearly contract, the bill is month to month. Overall I think the cost is more than worth it.
Sorry for the long post 🙂
