Unknown device issue in Win98 driving me nuts

To make a long story short, I recently resurected my AST PIII 500 computer from the dead. The restore cd was all scratched up so I just loaded Win98 and then installed the drivers from the restore. The only issue is that it keeps coming up with windows trying to find drivers for an Unknown Device. I've tried searching for the "device" in every file folder off the Restore CD and NOTHING! All devices seem to be running fine and stable. Besides disabling this device in Win 98 and having that damn ? with a splat on it, is there any way to remove the device and never have it show up again to try and install drivers for an unknown device?

Oh, and I installed Win2K on the system and no issues.

What does it think it is when it first see's it? Does it come back if you remove it? This usually happens with modems, and sound cards. Once you install the correct drivers for each, it will add more drivers from the first driver, and can't usually be found manually. Try removing it, and when you restart, see what it thinks it is before it changes to "?" Unknown Device. Hope that helps some.

It always comes up as unknown device. I've reinstalled the modem and sound drivers a couple times now. (I thought that's what it'd be too.)

by chance did the board come with on-board audio? If so & you are using a seperate soundcard, it may be detecting the on-board audio. If this is the case, disable it in the BIOS.
