i was trying to execute a script following these instructions (#2 towards the bottom of the page) at login by creating a loginhook. however, i must have somehow messed up editing the script that was called.

i used:
prog=(/usr/local/bin/synergyc -f hostname)

when it should have been something like this:
prog=(/usr/local/bin/synergyc -n $(hostname -s) ip-address-of-server)

since i didnt know that $ was a passed variable and went and edited with the hostname. now i can log-in but nothing happens; it just stays at the default apple login background/wallpaper.

i dont have any other accounts available on the system either, and i didn't enable the root account. what can i do? i've got access to my desktop pc and now.

thanks

UPDATE: i managed to fix this one before i turned in. i installed macdrive to allow me to read the native mac filesystem and i put the powerbook into target disk/firewire mode. i then edited the script with the correct parameters. and now it's back to normal. thanks again.

root is always enabled... try logging it as root:password you put in when you installed it

i'm at the login prompt, which has my profile name and password only. there's no where i know of to log in as root from the login window of OSX and i dont recall having to enable a root password, but then again i tend to use the login password on the system

Can't you boot off the CD and reset the password? I don't own OSX but they've got to have some reset option.

Alt-Fx doesn't work ?

never used OSX, but Alt-F2,3,4 should give you a different shell... should be runlevel 3.. then log in as root and do whatever.

been a long time since i've done any *nix though, and i was never very good.

i went and reset the root's password using an old panther restore dvd, and that allowed me to select "other" and i was then able to get into the root account. however, the same thing happens. i'm stuck at that default apple blue background w/ no desktop or icons at all. and the alt-Fx keys dont seem to do anything...

I just did a quick google and it says that when booting from the 10.4 DVD you can go to terminal. Login in as root from terminal. Go to config and reset the hostname.

Boot in to single-user mode. That'll give you root-ish access and enough power to delete the bad script.
